It's not hard to reach the conclusion that somewhere down the line they decided that they wanted to consume some of the literal fruits of that labor as well, and arrived where they are now in terms of diet.
The simple reason for all of that is that it's more relatable for both the main character and the intended audience if they're human-like in most ways, but taking it further it's not a long leap of logic to accept that they could end up the way they are now. Their relation to nature is still as a prey species that can itself only prey on the weakest forms of life in turn, unless they all band together, which is in keeping with reality as much as anything else.
The kind of society you're wanting wouldn't function as a society so much as a real-world food chain, which isn't really conducive to the overall narrative of the show.
