Nah. Bending ability is governed at least in part by what kingdom you and your ancestors came from.

You dont want to risk getting some earthbending in your proud firebending heritage.

Of course as the series progressed firebending ended up being probably the least powerful and versatile of bending abilities.

Problem is that the Fire nation never got something impressive when it came to bending. the average fire bender can toss around some piddling fire blast and had next to no utility while earthbenders and waterbenders got some pretty impressive AoE blasts, healing and construction utility powers and nifty super modes as blood bending and metal bending. While lightning bending basically was a slightly faster fireball.

Basically Fire Nation was like playing a D&D 3.5 paladin while everyone else played wizards and clerics.
