Eventually Turks get absorbed by the sheer amount of Pajeets, but the Islam stays. They oppress Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, and eventually Sikhs - when they emerge in Punjab. You ended up with millions of Muslims in Western India (now Pakistan) and parts of Eastern India. Central and Southern India kept Hinduism with Buddhism sprinkled throughout.
Enter Great Britain. They give immense power to the smaller, non-Muslim princes that still govern many states in the Muslim run India. The following wars were rather light, but they allowed a much heavier toll to fall onto India: colonization. They also brought Christianity which grew popular with various ethnic minorities that did not "belong" to either Hindu or Muslim ethnic groups.
Great Britain exploited the hate between the two groups by hiring Muslim guards to police Hindu regions and vice-versa. A few centuries of this creates deep animosity between the groups. Eventually India gains independence, but the two groups vie for power in the "democracy" that forms. Eventually, partition is found to be the only solution. Problem is: the two governments that form hate one another and start closing the borders nearly right away. Mass murders, neighborhoods being burned down, and race riots erupted shortly after. Minorities on either side of the fence were harshly cast out or slaughtered. Gandhi tried his best to keep the peace, but eventually even his great name and words fell victim to the most basic of human nature: hatred. He was assassinated and both sides blamed one another for his killing.
Boom.
