I'm not normally one to be all "think of the children," but... having the "coolest" girl in the show be all "yeah, sure, death is sweet release"... maaaaybe not a great thing to do in a show aimed at a younger demographic?

...Also it's pretty fucked up that Marco spent 15 years getting to know her and went "guess you'll just die then" in reaction to Star deciding all magic people deserve death.

I would have had no problem with them going for a dark ending if I believed for a moment that the writers intended it to be dark and weren't just being sloppy as fuck, winging it one moment, and going "fuck, just have her say she's fine with dying, we're already committed to this ending" when someone finally realized that there would be casualties if "The Magic" was destroyed.

Not sure if I agree.

They tried to have a serious, dark, and dramatic ending to a show about started out about a girl creating laser puppies and narwhal blasts. You CAN shift a lighthearted show into something serious and dramatic, but I'd argue that with this show they never pulled it off well.

at least they're trying to have good writing in a show. Even if all they're doing is imitating dramatic moments in other shows where someone's like, instead of fighting or arguing, just going with what a confident character believes in. As long as people support this, it's a step on the path to better writing.

it's not exactly a huge stretch to think magic is already on its way back, and this was just a gambit to wipe the taint on magic and start it over.

It's just a sign of the recent trends in western animation storytelling, OP. There are a lot of themes going around that amount to "destroy nearly everything that once brought you joy for the greater good". I think it's probably something to do with the zeitgeist of this generation of creators, but the bottom line is that they think poignant storytelling comes from having the heroes make grand sacrifices. Too often they don't seem to care whether the sacrifices make sense or what the real consequences would be.

Star Vs is a particularly bad case of this, I think. "Magic is bad" was not an idea that was ever established until the final few episodes. For all the other hundred episodes or whatever, it was always a force of fun with some occasional plot drama. And so sacrificing Gloss and the MHC and all the sentient spells and whoever else does not feel worth achieving the goal. Thus we are left with Heka's flimsy reasoning to justify this end.

Frankly, I'm getting pretty goddamn sick of this shit. I can only pray that whatever storytelling trend replaces it is at least marginally less infuriating.

Dude, Gargoyles was back in 1994. We've had plenty of time to learn how to do serious shows. At this point I'd argue that TRYING to be serious in a half-assed way is one of the bigger problems we've got. Voltron nosedived because they wanted to be serious but had no long-term plans. SvtFoE wasn't AS bad as that, but mostly because their inability to write a good serious plot was buffered by the fact that the show had not-entirely-shitty comedy elements.

But more to the point, I don't buy that "everyone just shut up and let Star call the shots" specifically is a good thing. "The most confident characters get what they want, no matter how bad their ideas are, and there's no discussion about it" is a terrible throwback to the action cartoons of the 80s.

No. I went "yeah, that tracks," because Moon had pretty consistently been giving Star zero real support when it came to supporting Eclipsa, and talking about it in a hollow joyless way. They could've handled it better though. Moon's mom was killed by monsters, would've brought some emotional nuance to have her say she's not over that, but this is a show where the writers didn't even know what tools they had in their toolboxes.

See, and there could have been something to that. Have an after-credits scene whenre Heckapoo washes up on an island in a golden sea, and Glossy is there and they have a conversation about how you can't actually destroy magic because it comes from living things and not from realms filled with unicorns. Those realms are just where magic collects.

Star destroying magic just destroyed that tainted reservoir, and now magic can come back fresh and renewed. Everything attached to the original ream of magic is gone, but Glossy used the very last of his power to attach Heckapoo to the new realm. He essentially makes her the new Glossaryck, hands her a new book of spells full of blank pages, and vanishes.

This also solves the problem of people getting stuck in other dimensions, or the dimensions that otherwise relied on magic because Heckapoo would be able to reconnect them all, and would also explain why creatures like the ponyheads are still alive because they natrually draw upon magical sources without needing to be attached to one.

Or maybe I'm just thinking too hard about something the writers didn't think about at all.

That's actually not a problem. Any monsters that cause trouble on Earth would get massacred by modern weapons. Reducing a Septarian to hamburger might not kill it, but it would definitely put it out of the fight. And if it's kept in tupperware or burned, it probably wouldn't be able to regenerate.

It's one thing to nitpick unimportant details, it's another to pull the thread to an obvious loose end. The implications of what Star did isn't going to escape kids. Not touching on them leaves a lot of questions, and that makes for one, dissatisfying finale.

How did the writers not see this coming? Was Disney cracking the whip that hard on them?

The impression I got towards the end was that there were story event checkboxes they wanted to tick, but they didn't have the wherewithal to make that follow logically from what had been set up. So they kind of fudged things, either hoping that viewers wouldn't notice enough to matter or not noticing themselves. One would really hope that they saw the problems themselves, but that's not a safe assumption in current year, when reasoned criticism is often regarded as bigotry or oppression. Things going bad when corrective mechanisms break down is nothing new, and this wouldn't be the first time it's resulted in genocide.

Which would put them on the level of random African warlords who regularly get massacred with impunity by UN peacekeepers with equivalent unsupported small arms. Septarians and monsters in general don't have the cultural infrastructure that underlies the effective use of modern weapons (see https://www.meforum.org/441/why-arabs-lose-wars for one real-world example). The combined arms forces of the local National Guard base would be untouchable in direct combat, and they lack the numbers, connections, or understanding of Earth culture to be an effective guerrilla force.

I liked his design and moveset. snakey crystal man who makes crystal magic, reminded me a lot of dark souls where sorcery is associated with crystals and serpents. I like how his eye is just a big cartoon line.

If things had gone according to plan, the Mewmans would be stuck, with no magic, surrounded by monsters that have superhuman abilities. And yeah, Buffrog and some others are decent folks, but there's utter asswipes like Toffee and Rasticore that 100% would murder the fuck out of Mewmans once it became that the balance of power had shifted so that monsters had more firepower.

Star's plan was super-bad. She went "you know what's the problem? Magic!" but magic was never the problem. Bigotry was.

It's not even bigotry. It's primitive groups competing for territory/resources. The "monsters" that established self-sufficient civilizations of their own like the Lucitors and Pigeons were well-regarded and interacted with peacefully by both royalty and commoners. The roaming groups of monsters who raided farms and towns were treated as the barbarians they were. Both groups had a pretty good idea of how interactions would play out, so it's not bigotry or ignorance, but the grim reality of living in an area where the uncivilized people haven't been killed or driven off long ago.

And as an aside, consider what happened when the Mewmans were forced from their homes. They promptly formed another fortified town with agriculture, division of labor including professional soldiers, and pushed a competent leader into being their queen. They were well on their way to rebuilding the quality of life they had been accustomed to, and weren't particularly interested in ruining things for others. The presence of monster kingdoms implies that some groups did the same after Mewmans arrived, and/or after Solaria rampaged around, but the ones considered "monsters" during the events of the series did not. Sometimes there are reasons why people are treated differently.

Yeah, the giant house, built by giants, long ago? That house is pretty much a perfect piece of proof that the monsters weren't just "roaming around, raiding things" before the Mewmans showed up.

The "monster" races are basically the monsters that were really close to where the Mewmans first landed, and got hit with the unlimited nukes of the wand until they ran away. Tom, the Pigeons, and the rest are races that lived far enough away that the Mewmans didn't feel the need to kick them out of their homes while yelling "we need this more!"

Pretty much. Except replace Star with Nefcy. Nefcy had written herself into a corner by forcing the tired old cliche of the main couple getting together at the end. So, after more seasons were ordered, she had to backpedal from the season 2 conclusion and start padding out the drama with more love interests.
Meaning that, when it was time for Marco and Star to get together, she then had to thin out the roadblocks that she'd put up as padding. Jackie was now in a relationship, Hekapoo was trapped in a bar and Kelly shrugged it off.
If Nefcy had spent the extra seasons letting Starco be lovey dovey and explore the multiverse, Hekapoo wouldn't have had to die or whatever happened to her.

I would argue it goes to show that it's a bad idea to take a cartoonist's idea and fundamentally change it before giving it the green light. It's way less likely they'll have a bunch of ideas ready to go and be put into story form, and way less likely they'll feel attachment for it. Rebecca Sugar and Alex Hirsch got to make the shows they wanted to make, and general consensus is that the resulting shows were stronger than SvtFoE, a show where the creator's pitch was changed into something EXTREMELY different.

IIRC Kishimoto said their kid would have one Sharingan and one Byakugan. Since they wanked Sharingans so hard in the original series that they're trying to give alternate Byakugan forms and evolutions to compensate for it originally being the same level of strength, they'd probably have some insane wankery.

What on Earth gave you that idea?

An artist made a pitch, the network told her to make fundamental changes to it. She and other writers tried to, but nobody had a strong end goal, because the show was no longer the creator's vision.

Maybe Nefcy should've done more to steer the show toward lighthearted fare and away from serious stuff, but "real fantasy cartoons" was apparently what her bosses wanted. I think the problem wasn't Nefcy or Cortugno, it was in the idea that you can make pretty big changes to a pitch and everything will somehow work out for the best.

Star Vs was all over the place in tone. The seriousness of some parts highlight how fucked up it was that she accidentally killed whoever was in that helicopter and gave no fucks about the danger she put them in initially. That attitude carries over to her decision kill a few magical people to save the monsters. It's almost appropriate that there's no fallout, but it makes the characters canonically sociopathic. Which makes sense in the context of the mental states of everyone, even the human extras; they react in inhuman ways to the unusual.

It all gets whitewashed in service of the plot. Basically, the hero story is that Star, the magic princess, destroys magic to save the world.
Unfortunately, a ton of things conflict with that being a real answer to the comparatively very minor problem they were dealing with at the time (some racists in armor punching one building).

It's a common writing problem where the creator goes totally tone deaf to their own setting, because there's something they want to happen. Everything falls in line and all the characters instantly become supportive. All issues that would be leveraged against the hero are either not addressed at all or hand waved as being irrelevant. That's why Hekapoo basically tells Star to put a bullet in her brain - she's the most well liked and visible magical character, so she's sock puppeted by the author to say Star is in the right, in a couple of lines of dialogue to move the plot along.

It's just sloppy writing due to bad authorship.

Most of the show's problems can be traced back to Nefcy creating a projection fantasy with all roads leading Marco to her pussy. The whole universe revolves around how destined they are to fuck. Marco has no friends or identity beyond being Star's future, most of the characters are either narrative handjobs for how desirable Marco is or how desirable Star is. Most of the plot points orbit whether they'll fuck; even Toffee early on slipped her that fortune cookie, knowing Star's pussy was the foundation for all of his plans. It's ridiculous. The show is a good example for why creators should never project their real lives onto a project; the whole setting falls apart in service to pleasing their ego.

Nefcy pitched a pre-teen goofball that imagined she had magic and dreamed up fabulous battles.

Eric Coleman told her "love the art! Make her magic powers real, and make her a teenager. Put her in highschool. Do teenage things with her."

Coleman's worked on a lot of good things so I'm not going to demand his head on a stake or anything, but all the teen shipping drama shit was a direct result of a writer being asked to throw in "teenage stuff" when her idea originally didn't have teenagers in it.

My problem is, this change in character was out of fucking no where, plus hypocritical.
She was always chill, until it came to Eclipsa. Then at the end of season 3, I think it was season 3, she seemed fine with Eclipsa once the council stopped to think about why they had a problem with Eclipsa.
Same can be said about Moon. Moon seemed fine with monsters once she met bufffrog, but then at the last minute she wanted her throne back.

Also it seems retarded and hypocrital that the council hated monsters, when they ALL were monsters. Yet they never addressed this.
Even Tom addressed that he is seen as a monster, yet Moon and the council never seemed to realize this.

I don't want to say rushed ending, but this monster racism ending that they stuck on for 2 seasons seemed stupid.
They could have easily just have had Mina be the only racist, and through something had Mina have been invincible with magic and ended with the same, destroy the magic, some people will still be racist with Mina ending without turning the council into unlikable hypocrites and making Moon a stupid bitch.

As it stands the ending felt really rushed and in retrospect some filler episodes that added nothing to the story should have been cut to tie up loose ends.

The deaths of the MHC, significant characters who have been around since S2 and friends of the heroes for most of it, are treated flippantly and light heartedly.
Even if they did get derailed into carboard cutout villains before the end, it's disturbing and tonaly inconsistent for SvTFoE to devalue life so off handidly, especially having a character decide it for herself.

And that's all after they set up Glossaryck to be an abusive father figure for some reason. An abusive father who was completely right apparently.

The groundwork for the justifications for destroying magic were already in place. They could have gone with, the nameless spell being permanent and/or the wounded monsters arrive at the healing temple to find that the water is purple and can't heal them. Either way the only answer would be to destroy magic. As big of a threat as Mina and her army was, destroying magic wasn't the only solution. That's what makes this ending shit, it want well established as the only way. And it would have been very easy for them to point to the spell or corrupted magic as the reason.

You can argue that these beings are actually representations of the structures that uphold unjust power structures, but the show has already taken the time to flesh them out. The end result is dehumanisation of living beings to justify wiping them out for the greater social good.

Trouble is, as an analogy it's forced as fuck, because the monsters aren't "regular people, only a little different-looking, with no privilege." Toffee's guys can heal a chopped-off arm. Ludo's people can fly (well, Dennis and presumably some others can). Slimes are semi-solid, letting them do all kinds of funky things, and at least some of them have the ability to heal others' injuries. Buffrog's able to jump insane distances. Some of them are fucking giants.

"Magic is an analogy for privilege" doesn't work in the world they created, because (1) pretty sure there's no beings made 100% out of privilege (no, not even in the White House), and (2) it's not a level playing field without the magic, because there's still superpowers.

This was a bad show.

Okay, even more so then. The way Regular Show was written, it was able to frame Pops' death as a very positive thing, letting the slacksquad grow the fuck up after a guy they were friends with took a bullet for e~v~e~r~y~o~n~e.

But Gravity Falls was a very different show, Stan meant a lot more to Mabel and Dipper than Pops did to Mordecai and Rigby, the kids really DIDN'T need to grow up (if anything they needed to slow down and enjoy what little childhood they had left), and honestly an elderly relative that's lost his memories and doesn't remember you... that's a LOT fucking darker than an old coworker turning Super Saiyan and dying in a blaze of glory.

It would've been better if Gravity Falls' staff had come up with a way for Stan to "con" Bill into dying without leaving some dudes pouting that Stan should've been lobotomized too, but in the end I think they made the right call in not going with the darker possibility, and it's just not the same as how Regular Show ended.
