>>107749405>Story and themesThe way I see it, the show only doubled down of its actual themes, namely the question of identity, and love. The latter is a bit more complicated but there was a nice quote in the Guide to the Crystal Gems, that explains it better.
>PearlHer character didn't change after the reveal, it only recontextualized her relationship with Rose and explained the reason for her obsession with her. Instead of being driven by selfishess, the reason for Pearl's obsession became a bit more tragic. The reveal did not retcon any development Pearl had because it there was no new revealations for her.
>GarnetPink's manipulations were not the main point of Garnet. Sure both R&S were hurt by the reveal, but there was no reason for them to suddenly stop loving each other. That was the point of the wedding, R&S still loved each other and wanted to stay together, so by Steven's suggestion they partook in a Earth custom to disassociate their relationship from RQ/PD.
>Story focusI guess, Sucrose had that fantasy idea of reverse-escapism, where the fantastical find beauty in the mundane.
>StevenAnd what is the end result? The diamonds wouldn't have stopped being condescending assholes to Steven if he hadn't called them out on mistreating PD. WD would've self-destructed sooner or later, but YD and BD would've turned on him if he hadn't talk sense into them.
I dunno where the story would've went if the twist hadn't happened, but the focus of Steven's arc were not his ideals, but his identity. And as the main antagonists of the story arc, the Diamonds had to relate to Steven's identity somehow.
