It has to be an alt timeline because ALL of the time travel in the movie is explicitly to alt timelines. They're repeatedly told nothing they do in the past will change THEIR OWN past. So why would the one thing Cap does at the end suddenly follow different rules?

It's a paradox that contradicts the rules.

It's just a plot fuck up. They wanted the scene with Cap appearing old on the chair, but couldnt find a way to reconcile it with their rules.

the problem was they didn't wanted to ruin the scene by showing Steve getting back as an old man, but we already know, from the movie itself, that they don't need the platform to do time-jumps (see Tony and Steve in the 70s)

Thats why they needed guidance tech to navigate the quantum realm. They already have the coordinates to each point in time the stones were taken from. So Cap just navigates to each point. Not possible. Because time travel just creates new timelines. So when Cap goes back to return the stones, what he's actually doing is creating new timelines where he's returned the stones but the original ones that lost the stones never get them back.

So there's really no point in sending Cap back at all. Those timelines are fucked regardless.

Sharon is Peggy's niece right? But Cap didn't have siblings and Peggy only had a brother that died before having any kids. So Sharon would have had to come from Peggy's husband's side of the family so I don't think Cap could've been the husband the whole time

Technically, multiple timelines and stable time loops are compatible.

There's a problem when something would un-happen; this is why there's no going back and garrotting baby Thanos to prevent the snap; there's still a timeline where it's happened and that would do nothing to help it.

But it's also possible that the time travel ALWAYS happened, that there was just one timeline with a loop in it, and it's only a lack of information that makes it seem like a change. When events start seriously diverging (like Loki getting away, or Thanos going to the future and not coming back,) clearly there's a divergence, but when nothing precludes the change from always-having-happened, it might always have happened.

So it's totally possible that he went to an earlier point in the original timeline, in a stable loop, living on the down-low as Steve Shmodgers, unassuming and very-private husband to Peggy Carter, and that's how it always worked.

(Except for him having the shield intact, which suggests there was indeed divergence somewhere. Or maybe it's a replica his older self got T'Challa to have made in secret, or...)

Your halfway there. By taking the stones and returning them they only made one alternate timeline per jump. Yes you can’t change your past by showing up and giving your past self lottery numbers and then jumping back and becoming rich. You can however alter others past freely if it doesn’t impact you at all.
Example in the movie would be Tony giving his dad the “No amount of money can buy time” line. Daddy Stark has never heard it, now assuming that they did create an alternate timeline that is the split timeline when they jumped from the original timeline daddy Stark wouldn’t know that phrase in the true timeline and wouldn’t have told it to Tony who wouldn’t have been able to jump and tell dad the phrase. But since the true timeline Tony knows the phrase that would mean that the timeline where Tony gives his dad the phrase is apart of the true timeline. And since the cube was returned and then used in the future as apart of the story Cap and Tony’s jump was always apart of the timeline.

Madam Supreme was referring to branching timelines happening if you alter events to the point where the event couldn’t have happened at all (take a stone and not return it) BW/Hawk/Neb/Wars timeline was altered cuz Thanos did a jump and died in the future so he wasn’t around to get the stones and snap, altered timeline. Hulk/Cap/Ant/Iron timeline was altered when Loki escaped. Thor/Rocket probably wasn’t altered cuz Thor’s mom can see all these timelines and knows where the leeway is, plus nothing was really altered from those events (hammer was returned, possibly 1 second after Thor/Rocket leave so no big changes) Tony/Caps second jump also had no lasting effects. Hank still has some particles and as long as Cap jumps back right after they leave the cube never left it’s safe so no changes there. If Cap had decided to stay in that line events would profess naturally with him in the background. Now if Cap decided to say, tell Peggy about Hydra/Shield then that timeline would be split, but there would also be one where he doesn’t tell her and things progress as they should.

What the hero’s are told is true as far as they know, you can’t alter the past to drastically change the present. You can however travel to the past and walk around, not touch anything and not create an alternate timeline. Jumping itself doesn’t cause a split, the actions you do after jumping do.

Why is there even an argument?

Based on their rules, there was no way for Cap to travel back anywhere and anytime other than when Banner pulled him out yet he appeared anyways at the end.

They broke their own rules and the shot was literally just there for the scene with no thought put into the time traveling aspect because that's only important to autistic people

Technically they do, it's just that if you make no discernible changes history proceeds in that timeline just like in the main one.
People like to cite the butterfly effect as proof of ANY changes made in the past having potentially far-reaching effects in the future but forget that in "A Sound of Thunder", the story that popularized the term, stepping on a butterfly is a deviation from regulated time travel where the travelers take care not to make any notable alterations, e.g. killing a dinosaur that was minutes from death anyway.

No, that final scene really does not tell or show you anything at all. Cap is just on a bench. There needed to be something that leads a viewer to know that he popped in from elsewhere, or at least came back at some earlier point. His just being there leads someone to assume he lived his whole life in that timeline and just knew to sit there on that day on that time. If they really wanted us to know he came back from some alternate world then he would have to pop back in visually at some point.

She absolutely does not say this. She says the infinity stones create "what you perceive as the flow of time" and that REMOVING A STONE causes a split. It's absence causes the split, not any other actions. And then Bruce says if they return the stone the instant after they take it the split will never happen. This is the only time, ever, a split or creating a seperate timeline is ever mentioned anywhere in the entire move.

Hulk says you can't change the present by changing the past because when you travel to the past that becomes your future. He never says anything about branching timelines.

Loki steals the stone in 2012 and nothing that is done at any point in the movie changes or erases this event. Tony and Lang consider this so inconsequential they don't even mention it to anyone. Yet this must create a new timeline where Loki is never imprisoned in Asgard which completely changes Thor2/3 and the start of IW. Nebula kills her past self. Thanos suddenly disappears in 2012 and never returns meaning the events in IW/EG never happen. At no point during and of this is the creation of a new timeline ever discussed on camera.

The directors say Cap created a new timeline and lived in it with Peggy.

Two days later the writers said Cap never left the main timeline and was always married to Peggy.

TL;DR - I love the movie but the entire time travel aspect is a huge muddled mess

If they didn't want people to spend the next ten years continually arguing about alternate timelines and paradoxes then maybe they should have at least mentioned creating alternate timelines and the consequences of such a thing in a movie that creates AT LEAST five and probably more.

All it would have taken is ten seconds of Hulk explaining how it works in story and we wouldn't all be spending time uselessly arguing about this. Instead Hulk never even address the issue at all, in a movie that spends the next 90 minutes changing time. The Ancient Ones speech is worse than useless because she talks as if the only way to create a branch timeline is remove a stone and putting the stone back prevents it this just muddies the water even more by not talking about what happens when you change past events without doing anything to a stone. She never talks about how changing past events creates new timelines and the consequences of it, neither does Hulk, neither does Tony.

It's the fault of the people who made the film. All it needed was one brief scene where Tony or Hulk explains what happens when you change past events. All Hulk says is you can't change the present because the past becomes your future when you travel there, okay what happens with Loki running around free in 2012 now then? Loki can't both be imprisoned in Asgard and never imprisoned in Asgard. It has to create a new timeline or create a universe breaking paradox.

But they did? They outright say that changing the past won't change their present, just the past, and how it doesn't work like in Back to the Future.

Considering how we're getting spin-offs related to characters who were involved with these timeline issues, I'd guess we'll get a definitive answer to them soon anyway.

Heck, the Russo's view is likely shaped by them knowing info about these spin-offs that isn't public yet.

Honestly the destruction of the stones solves the entire issue, and still justifies the rules and allow changes at the same time. As AO said, removing a stone causes the timeline to branch off. Thanos nuking them in present day creates the exact scenerio she warned about times 6. We dont know how many timelines just got spawned, making Mysterio's claim of a multiverse in Far from Home possibly legit.

Hulk, Tony and the Ancient One all never say it, Ancient One just talks about removing the stone creating a split. It's never mentioned. Not once. That's what's causing all this trouble.

In fact Hulk's speech, despite directly talking about how changing the past won't change the present, never mentions new timelines or splitting timelines. That right there was the time to address this. Hulk speech, along with the ancient ones speech, actually make things worse because all Hulk says is "when you travel to the past that past becomes your future" if you wanted to you could use this to argue for their being only one timeline, except this creates paradoxes like Loki being captured/free.

All it is is a big waste of everyone's time. We are arguing interpretations of an imaginary story that the people who created couldn't be bothered to explain properly or even keep consistent among themselves.

My personal headcanon;
Thanos/Gamora/Nebula disappear suddenly in 2012 creating Universe B. IW and EG never happen there. Gamora never joins the Guardians.
Loki escaping creates Universe C where he is never imprisoned. Changing events in Thor 2/3 and IW.
Cap never creates a new timeline, he stays in our universe, Universe A, and just grows old with Peggy then goes and sits on that bench. Where'd he get a new shield then? I dunno and fuck you.

The explanations by Hulk and the Ancient One are confusing and misleading precisely because the screenwriters didn't understand the time travel in their own movie. They are complete hacks.

After he went into the ice, the cap that went back and married Peggy approached Howard Stark, swore him to secrecy, asked him to make another shield, then kept it under his bed for 60 years and eventually gave it to Falcon. Writers confirmed it in a Q&A this week. Keeps everything in one timeline.

It makes perfect sense if cap never changes anything. He goes back, marries Peggy, lives a quiet happy life for 50 years, watches on tv as he is found in the ice and awoken, waits until the day he travelled back, walks to the park and sits on that bench.

It's a perfect closed timeline loop. He always was Peggy's husband. Nothing was changed.

It's a lot less like time travel and a lot more like creating pocket dimensions. There is no timeline where loki escaped, despite us seeing those events, because there was no point in time during those events where an infinity stone was missing. In fact the timeline ends up being: Tony steals the space gem from Shield, Cap returns it, Shield uses it in propulsion experiments and gives Carol her powers, Loki uses it to help Thanos invade earth, Loki steals it and escapes because Hulk had to take the stairs.

In retrospect, the Ancient One's explanation is needlessly cryptic. Based on the visuals and everything else that happens in the movie, she was likely just talking about how removing the stone will result in Dormammu taking over this branch because he will win when the Doctor Strange events come around without the time stone to stop him. A literal dark timeline, but not something that is hard coded into the universe itself if a stone disappears. After all, Thanos erases all of the stones and doesn't cause any universe effecting things to happen.

Cap took four vials of particles from the 70's. That's two vials more than they needed to get home.

So on top of the particles they would have gotten from Present Hank so that he could return all the stones to where they came from, one vial gets himself to the 40's to be with Peggy, and one vial gets him back to the main timeline as an old man without using the platform, so he can sit on the bench and surprise everyone.

She hears him and the scene continues AFTER he goes back. Going back didn't "fix" it. There is no "collapse of the anomaly."

My headcanon is Strange saw millions of possible futures but he was looking at the wrong part of infinity.
So he ends up where from those millions, Endgame was the best result, but if he had kept going or if he had been looking at different timelines, he would have found endless better results, like one where he could have stopped the snap from happening in the first place and call in everyone, Avengers, the wizards, Asgardians to fight Thanos without his army.

Cause Gamora wasn't in the alternate timeline anymore. She's essentially a clone with memories up to just before the first Guardians movie. She's a displaced remnant. Had Thanos or Nebulas time displaced clones not died in the final battle/snap they'd still be running around too. But the universe/timeline where they disappeared and the guardians never formed doesn't exist anymore.

Cap is timeline hopping. He can't change his/the past, so he can only jump to moments within the new timelines that have been affected by his initial jumps. He can resume his state in one of the new timelines, but he can't precede the state created by his initial jump without jumping to another new timeline altogether. In essence, it's no different than undoing the snap in the current timeline. You can pop back into your own present state within any timeline; you just can't precede it. For example, current timeline avengers didn't create a new timeline when undoing the snap in their own. They just grabbed items from other timelines, popped back into their present time, and undid the snap. Something similar is happening in the timelines where the infinity stones derived. They return to their present state within those new timelines moments after leaving but never any period before they left.

The problem would be that now there are timelines where Natasha's suicide didn't happen and thus the Avengers don't get the Soul Stone to undo the snap and one where Tony wasn't present during the final battle to do all his shit, up to and including suiciding himself to snap Thanos and his army away. That's the reason why the Time Heist only worked with items they were going to use once or twice and then returned to when they were taken: it allows the things the Avengers know will happen to continue to happen. And even then it wasn't perfect. The universe they first went to with the Battle of New York now has a Loki with the Space Stone fucking around. And perhaps other minor changes like taking those Pym Particle or knocking Quill out (or not so minor like Thanos and his forces completely ceasing to exist) will result in slightly or hugely different series of events.

The Avengers wouldn't choose to go back and take these people because they out right know it will result in worse outcomes. Maybe they could go back and help them make better outcomes, though someone still has to die for the Soul Stone. Perhaps they steal it from a point where someone else has already made a sacrifice. Or they go back and help defeat Thanos's army without Tony having to make a sacrificial snap. But all this would result in is happier AU where those characters would stay. There's no real way to time steal them to exist in perpetuity in your timeline without fucking over someone else's.

The rules are pretty cut and dry. I understand them pretty well. Yeah there's other universes, and they have their own timeline. The MCU is one timeline, and is possible to split by removing infinity stones. Some of this is specifically stated and the rest is inferred pretty fucking easily. The only people making it more contrived are the people arguing about all the supposed alt timelines that would theoretically exist at the end of Endgames story if your theory was 100% true. They specifically say they cut the branches.

Steve was always in the past, but he married someone other than Peggy. He danced with her, explained the timey wimey stuff. Then they both went on their separate lives.

Steve laid low as a farmer in Canada. Occassionally beating up local criminals. Peggy finds a new love but keeps up like she misses Steve for appearances.

Steve didn't tell Falcon about his wife because she wasn't peggy. She was just some normal woman that never knew he was captain America. He didn't want to drag his family into his life as Cap. So he just isn't telling anyone.

They put the mind stone back therefore negating any split thereafter INCLUDING LOKI ESCAPING because the mind stone was stolen before that event chronologically. There is no extra timeline where Thor 2 never happens anymore once the mind stone is replaced. Whether Loki's escape is completely erased or it just takes slightly linger for Thor to take him back to Asgard is something yet to be seen

When an infinity stone is returned, the possible alternate timeline snaps back into place. It doesn't continue on. Even with a removed, dead Thanos, it's reverted back into continuity. It would have only continued to branch off if a stone was never returned.

I agree. This was demonstrated by the ancient one removing a stone and creating a visual for the doomed timeline. When Bannon returns the stone, that alternate timeline disappeared and returned to the normal path.

All Cap is doing was predestined to happen and because of that cap was always supposed to go back in time to place all the stones back making the timeline whole again like Bruce Banner had said it would.
Basically we keep thinking time is either 1 stretch of events or when time travel is involved it either branches into new reality or butterfly effect time line when it could be more.

Seems like Steve going back and putting the stones back was something that was supposed to happen, almost like Back to the future rules, but things like time travel basically created an alternate time line which probably resulted in creating the prime timeline but it's an endless loop of creating timelines where there are new time lines copying the Prime time line.
