>>107423330I watched the Alternate Universe Cut yesterday and I got to say, there's something about most of the cut scenes that makes me really glad they got cut. Of course there's something to say about polish being important and that a few script tweaks couldn't salvage some of them too, but almost all of them - especially scenes with Ganke - have this typical Sony Pictures Animation style toilet kid shit humor that doesn't gel with the rest of the film and would've been obnoxious if it did. Fucks sake Ganke at one point tries to scrape off Miles from the ceiling with butter. And pulls off his underwear to show his butt. And also they have a dance off. It's just ridiculous that I wonder if they had some storyboarder still operating under the impression this was the Emoji Movie.
And while these scenes don't come around as often in the later half of the movie, there's still some originals like the toilet falling on sp//der and the scene where Aaron and Jeff are interrupted by a pizza guy that have signs of that same problem.
Finally even the scenes that maybe should've been kept like Peter talking to Miles after his failed test with the rest of the Spider gang could've been improved. Like there was no need for Peter to go "YES that was emotional!" at the end of that scene.
Basically what is interesting here is that by cutting this stuff, SPA are showing a rising awareness that they do not NEED to have that sort of shit in their films. They can just let their movies be mature at no loss of entertainment. And even though I would've appreciated more Ganke at some point in the film, maybe if they can't sort him into the narrative yet it's best they're staying him out until the sequel.
Hopefully what this means is a future for SPA where they don't make shit film after shit film, learning the lessons they have from Into the Spider-Verse.
