Whenever someone finds out about it, it kills them and anyone who shares similar thought processes to them, being mentally adjacent to the original victim (so your family, friends, your dog, etc). This is a defensive mechanism for it, so it can slip into reality with ease, and it's frighteningly effective. It also replaces people with itself, seemingly at random. Tearing away everything that makes a person human, and only leaving a manifest hole in the world that shows no noticeable changes from what they once were.
