I'll tell you what went wrong: (you) went with the boring backstory premise, it could have been salvaged if the backstory allowed them to punch things in the first 5 minutes.
It took the girls 45 minutes of the movie to realize "Oh my God we can punch things!!" yeah, thanks, but the show's intro already covered that up and the original episode already had you called "The Whoop Ass Girls" for a fucking reason, not because it sounded funny.
They went with the sad little girls slice of life side of the show instead of the "Buttercup making the devil bleed" side of the show. For that matter Mojojo is more of a slice of life villain compared to HIM which all his episodes were amazing and movie atmosphere material. The PPG's doppelgangers also would have been amazing for the movie. Same for Monster Island.
