In Japan nobody even uses the term yaoi anymore, and western people who are interested in the subculture have followed suit. But pitting bara and bishounen against each other creates a false dichotomy, since they are two subgenres but they don't represent every body type/character design that can be represented.

Japan has different concepts of masculinity and male desirability than we do. They associate hyper-masculinity with homosexuality, and most women prefer men who are mild-tempered and a bit androgynous, or even effeminate.
