He wasn't as good as certain people then or after, but I don't see him as being as egregious as *actual shit* fanboy writers. He just did what he wanted to with then-old characters. Oh and later the Kree-Skrull war that had no impact then or now, and a fairly well-regarded Dr Strange run. But I'll concede. My bad.
You still haven't answered my second question, which is pertinent to the issue. Plenty of outsiders and "real authors" have delved into capeshit in recent years. Which ones have made good/memorable runs? If you can list a bunch off, I can accept that it's a legitimate solution to issues now.
