I stopped watching Star vs the Forces of Evil around the beginning of season 3. Nothing particularly made me want to stop watching, interest just kind of dwindled.

From what I've gleamed from threads around here, it's gone down the shitter. What exactly happened?

The Toffee movie was intended as the end as far as I can see and they're just dragging it on and milking it an extra season. I'm still enjoying it but there's nothing too exciting going on, compared to the threat of Toffee, or even the season 2 shipping/cuck stuff.

Two reasons:
1) The show moved away from consistently showing Star & Marco as incredibly close friends. This was one of its biggest appeals and one of the reasons it stood out.
2) The shows themes and plot threads collapsed after Toffee was defeated. Before they felt like they were consistently building towards something even if we didn't know what. Now they increasingly look messy and contradictory. The show can't maintain any kind of momentum or tension.

The show went to bullshit when they changed a fun adventure show into some pointless teenage shipping drama without any progress. Pretty much right after Battle for Mewni

I agree with the theory that the show was originally supposed to end with the battle for Mewni "movie". When the proper season 3 started it completely lost its balance. This wouldn't be so bad if they focused on the good parts, but for whatever reason they banked on shipping (which mostly feels forced af and nowhere near as natural as it did in S2) and monsters "wuz kangz and dindu nuffin" (which is both boring and a total asspull). Most of the charm and humour is gone, replaced by fuck all.

And it's a vicious circle too. I'm pretty sure that the authors are aware of the overall drop in quality, but at the same time know that most fans won't drop the show when it's at the "they totally gonna bang... but not in this episode!" stage.

Was that any different in S1? Fucking no. The plot literally didn't go fucking anywhere, it was just villain of the week, and preparing for future romance drama.
