The show definitely portrays dark magic as evil (or at least against the natural order of things), but its practitioners--even dicks like Viren--aren't instantly evil just because they use it. They're given understandable motivations.
It would help if people like Moon Nexus Elf Lady weren't unhelpful assholes: "sorry dude you just don't get to do any primal magic sucks to be you, don't even bother trying, but also never use the only form of magic your people have figured out how to do!"
Maybe dark magic is sort of like bioengineering: sure, you can have benevolent reasons for developing a new, unkillable strain of smallpox. You might even invent some useful new viruses. But overall it's still a terrible idea.
