In Gundam, grunt fights in space are essentially WWII dogfigts, where they get shredded fast by ballistics, and it isn't until the RX-87 starts a arms race in a few decades span, it doesn't even take a century until the mecha get squishy again because of how powerful armaments become, so they resort to evasion and downsizing as the best defense. Some series have the mecha with point-defense mechanisms for shit like missiless or infantry, like the head mounted vulcans in Gundam.
