Sun, presumably. But dark magic seems to enable a single mage to do greater feats of power (hence why it's more dangerous and potentially volatile than primal magic), so you'd probably need a team of sun mages to accomplish what Claudia did with the deer.

His cube also works with all six, and Harrow says he was supposedly a master of all of them, and that's a pretty good indicator that if he can use three of them (sun, sky, star), he likely also has the other three as well (moon, earth, water). Actually, he did use what looked like an ice spell and some sort of earth-disintegrate spell through Viren, which might be water and earth.

I found it kind of fun how the show seems to be trying to rub it's portrayals of death into the audience's face at times. To me the shows biggest weakness is definitely carrying serious tone from scene to scene. but the last two episodes felt a bit better.

It will probably be revealed that he was secretly an elf supremacist who didn't want to just get rid of the humans, but he actually wanted to straight out genocide them all. So he probably goes to them on the sly, shows them dark magic, expecting them to leap at using it instead of any sort of primal magic. And they do. So he takes his case to the elves, but they decide to just kick the humans out rather than exterminate them all. And so he gets angry, and maybe something happens, possibly the Elarion girl sells him out, and the elves realise what's happened and that he tricked them. They seal Aarevos up so he can't do anything any more, set up the Mirror so that they can keep an eye on him just in case, and because the humans have dark magic and won't give it up, they leave the border in place and just scrub out all the histories, because they don't want that dark shit near them.

No, we haven't met him before, but he was in the promo art, and we saw him flying around during the little exposition dump at the beginning of season 1. Doesn't have the big scar on its face, so it's possible it was a different dragon, or just Sol Reigos before his face got fucked up.

He only goes back to Aaravos when he has absolutely no other choice in the matter, and he's also clearly not taking him entirely at his word.

Well given that six fingers on humans is a dominant trait, I'd say five fingers, like the human Avatars who were hybrids of Na'vi.

Give it a thing where half elfs look obviously more human to Elves because of their fingers, facial structure (clear from skin markings, maybe no horns) while humans think they look more like elves because of the ears.

Season 2 seems a little contentious on /co/ but I thought it built wonderfully on the characters and lore established in season 1. It took a bit but I started finding Ezran, Soren and Claudia genuinely compelling by the end and it was neat to learn more about how magic works and see Callum finally understand primal magic. All in all pretty good.

This show has honestly done such a good job with avoiding cheap drama that I trust it more than most. All the early stuff this season with Rayla not trusting Claudia and Callum disagreeing but accepting that she had reasonable grounds for that, and then Callum forgiving Rayla for not telling him about Harrow because he realized how hard it was when it was his turn to tell Ezran, etc etc.

It would seem the slow burn towards Raylum is beginning, but I cannot see it working out with the huge difference in life spans between elves and humans. Human Rayla even comments on human's sub-century life spans. And Callum doesn't seem like the type that would magically extend his life.
If they do decide to hook up, they had better address this very important issue.

I think the worldbuilding was worse than season 1. A lot of what we got this season was absent of any detail and seemed presented only for plot contrivance, like the pentarchy. I also thought the humor was worse. Viren's characterization was the only thing I'd say unquestionably improved.

The hit on Harrow was retaliation for killing her husband and child. The Sun Elves amassing and dragon probing is them gauging the humans reaction to the assassination to see if they are planning on retribution. They are not planning on attacking unless the humans draw first blood and vice versa. The whole thing is a powder keg waiting to go off.

That was just natural brother stuff, like meeting the dad of a girl you've been dating seriously and tells you if you hurt her, he'll kill you. They really feel like a classic regular brother and sister on good terms.

What I really hope for Claudia's arc is that she keeps sinking deeper and deeper into dark magic, moving away from the silly lesser sacrifices like butterflies and deer into the worse and worse stuff as she needs more powerful spells to try to save the kingdom. I want her to wander down into darkness a step at a time, until she's lost everything and the only thing she has to hang onto is her memory of Callum as the one good thing left to her.

And then I want her to see him kissing Rayla and fucking snap.

This show gets me confused. I feel like it's trying to go for a "both sides are wrong/right" way but the villains are painted as either overthetop dipshits or overthetop strawman villains to make their arguments less sound.

Another thing that confuses me.
The fuck is wrong with Dark Magic? I get the general gist of it, sap magic from another creature, use it for yourself.

Except it's not like there's ritualistic sacrafices or stealing another being's souls. It doesn't even need to.

So far we've seen a Dark Magic spell can use a toe, a hair, flowers, bug goop... sure it can also use body parts from creatures, but then we see Xadians not hesitating to take lives themselves. They eat meat. They kill humans. They kill eachother. They use despicable tactics like assassinations and holding hostages. So why is squishing a few moths to cast a spell more terrible than the bullshit Xadians do?

Also what's with this "Too Easy" message they shoehorn into everything? I get the idea. Don't take the shortcut. Do things the RIGHT way, not the EASY way.

But "too easy" to gather the ingredients, the rare materials, to study the magic? No, it's easy because all the shit was already prepared. Dark Magic seems more difficult than anything else! Sure, it's "too easy" compared to having to do things without magic, but it's no where near as easy as having natural magic.

The more I think about this show the more I actually want to bitchslap the Xadians and the Dragons for being the assholes.

I think there are going to be some Faustian Contract parallels where the long-term effects of dealing in dark magic have clear negative repercussions on the bodies and minds of its users, but I think it's really silly to paint it as pure evil after its been used to feed tens of thousands of starving people at the cost of one gollum and cured a permanently crippled man at the cost of a deer.

I felt bad that the impact of the spell might have scarred Claudia in some way, considering that she's losing the color in her hair, but killing one deer to mend someone who would never be able to walk again otherwise is a super sweet deal.

So unless they completely backtrack on the benefits and have the dark magic make Soren explode or something next season because it wasn't a natural fix, then I'm completely on board with using dark magic in dire circumstances.

The elves clearly did nothing wrong. All plants and creatures are connected to a greater primal source. Their souls are valuable and to destroy them is the greatest crime of all. A crime to the gods and a crime against nature.

I would say that the ethnic cleansing of humans was justified, but that would imply that the elves needed a justification to do that. Humans have no natural connection to primal forces and to magic. Therefore they are worthless in connection to the magic of this world. They are beneath even the animals and plants they would sacrifice. Plants and creatures whose magical value is infinitely more than any magic-less, worthless human life.

Personally, I don't think the forceful segregation of elves and humans was enough. Every magical plant or animal they take to going to waste. Obliteration of a living connection to magic. And for what? Serving their own meaningless desires. Every time a human dies nothing is lost, but every time the magical essence of a creature wasted and taken, the whole world dies a tiny bit. It's a plot point not fully fleshed out yet, because a lot of people have this question. And the creators themselves stated in the making of this show that good and evil would not be so clear cut. So it doesn't seem all that strange that Dark Magic will not be as bad as you believe it to be later on.

But that's just it. If the creature is dead, then whether or not it can still use magic is irrelevant. It's dead. The show doesn't exactly make it seem cruel. Now if they were writhing in pain? Or if there were screams? Or agony? Yes, it'd be cruel. But most of the time it seems like they just need already dead creatures or plantlife. Is Dark Magic still bad if all you have to do is go to the store, buy some sunflower seeds, get some slabs of meat, and maybe some vegetables? And how is it unnatural? It's there isn't it? What makes something "unnatural"?

We don't really see anyone be corrupted. We just seem them shave years off of their life or drain themselves. I find that rather noble if done for a good cause. Casting a spell that drains ten years off your life to let your brother walk again seems grand and respectable. And I doubt it's the reason Viren goes megalomaniacal. That'd imply that out of his entire life using Dark Magic, only in the last month or two of the time happening in the show has it started to twist him. I doubt that, as that'd be bad story writing and I have higher confidence in the writers.

Now please, if you are going to respond, please be respectful and state your opinion point for point, and at least offer explanations -why- you think so, instead of using ALL CAPITALS LIKE IT MAKES YOU SOUND COOL OR SOMETHING.

Magic is obviously spiritual in this world like it is in Avatar. Killing a creature "returns its magical essence" into the world naturally. It follows a sort of magical energy conservation. Dark magic destroys magical energy. Sure killing a creature isn't wrong because it isn't sentient or sapient, but you are wasting an unrenewable resource. Even if you are using dark magic here and there and not killing anything yourself. Eventually, the world will lose its magic.

That said...

It does seem like they're going for a very Avatar approach to the elements. Like in S2E9 "Breathe" how Callum is explaining how the world is like a Primal Stone.
But I don't recall it saying in the show anywhere it saying it destroys magical energy. As far as I can tell from what they say and do on the show they just take magic from one thing and use it from something else.

Instead of taking the magic from nature, they take it from entities, if that makes sense. But it gets released back to be used anyways.

Now if it does turn out that it is effectively destroying the magical energy, or corrupting it in a way to be unusable or dangerous (think radioactivity or sewage in waters) then I can understand Dark Magic actually being fucking terrible. But I haven't see or heard that yet. If it was mentioned then source please?

I can see the show's message of doing things the RIGHT WAY and not the EASY WAY could be more poignant, especially since it appears with Callum that humans can learn how to use magic traditionally.

In both seasons we see Viren TURN FUCKING PURPLE AND HIS VEINS TURN ALMOST BLACK when he uses high level dark magic

Claudia turned into a fricken lightening rod from just stealing the life energy of something bigger than a snake and after transferring it to her brother. Part of her hair turned from stark black to pure white, THAT IS A TOLL ON THE USER, it doesn't matter if you use it for the right reason, no other magic using being shown thus far goes through that kind stress to use magic

Callum was in a coma for a day after ONE SPELL, it goes against the order of the in setting universe and preys upon the life force of living creatures

It is bad

Compare it to all other magic we've seen and it is as the characters and the show's creators have said in AMA's on Reddit, a nasty shortcut

I think that dark magic has had a long term negative effect has both his mind and body that are finally reaching a late stage effect. Like a cancer that's been growing over time, with each spell he's cast. I imagine that Viren has used more magic than most.
There is definitively an effect that Dark Magic has on the body. We haven't yet seen any evidence of negative effects on the mind yet, unless you count Callums' dream, I don't, however Claudia has now babbled in what seems to be real Dark Magic. We'll have to watch her closely in season 3 to see if this has any effect on her personality.
Or it could just be that killing things has a desensitizing effect on people and they just grow used to killing as a coping mechanism, dark magic need not apply. I'd argue that's equally as bad as getting magically corrupted.

That he could learn all primal elements just through practice, understanding and all that shit seems like a really fucking big deal. That Aaravos also seems able to use all primal elements is probably going to be no small thing in the future.

Its kind of weird that no other elf seems to be able to use magic beyond the stuff they were born with too. I guess itll be explained that since one type of magic is so natural no elf ever really felt any desire to learn another kind, outside of Aaravos obviously.

I hope they give a good explanation of why no humans ever learned like Callum has, or if other humans have learned, why its so unknown

Historically killing the kids would have been a great idea, a young idealist prince who might boot him out, who he hasn't had a chance to ever manipulate.

Dark magic isn't a separate thing. When you use dark magic, you are channeling a primal source through an intermediary.

Yeah, it made no sense to me. Rayla has shown n signs of attraction to Callum in the entire show, they seemed more like buddies, and then this out of nowhere. I don't know what to think. Claudia at least seemed to have some attraction to him. (although it could be fake as she was trying to convince him to come home with her, but i doubt it) Rayla had none, and i don't like the idea of their relationship - it's always the two main protags who end up together in every show, anyway.

Well to be fair I felt some chemistry between them in this season, although confession still would be pretty much out of nowhere.
Anyways she thought he's dying or something, and all in all they're teens who you know saved each others' lives several times already and stuff, so in such situation words "I love you" might've crossed her mind. For one she realized she finds him very important to her, I think the romance part will be taken slow in third season

Even in the first season there were some scenes that laid a fundament to a friendship at least desu though the same goes for Rayla & Ezran. Both Callum and Ezran talked to Rayla about personal stuff, and Moon Elves are all about appearances, right? So she might not be used to such honest talks with friends. Even though they haven't spent that much time with each other, emotionally she may feel closer to them than to Moon Elves folks - she's a bit different to her people anyways, like others don't seem particularly concerned about moral objections towards a job of an assasin

Honestly dark magic on average is not different form killing cattle. I don't remember Callum & co felt bad when they saw the feast with full of meat the illusionist elf prepared for them.

How is dark magic a shortcut? If anything Callum learning primal magic is easier than years of studying and gathering the right materials. I really hope there is an explanation on why he can use it beyond his epiphany which I am sure others would have had

Viren couldnt go against hordes without a primal stones or components for dark magic. The channeling could only do so much, and Aaravos is as pragmatic as Viren himself so standing down for the moment was better than letting viren get killed.

You don't have to learn a sigil by heart, nor learn draconic language for it.
You don't need to understand the arcanum either.

Callum especially has it easy when learning primal magic since he has an eidetic memory and can easily remember and trace the sigils after seeing them once.
As well as the words and how they're said.

No not really. He learned primal magic because that is actually the easier way for the writers. Just like in the series Heroes where the hero could learn any ability by just seeing it and the bad guy had to kill for it. This way the hero can avoid all the hard decisions. Avatar did the same conveniently giving Aang the tools to not kill.

For Dark Magic you have to learn an incantation. There is a reason why it requires a spell book. Claudia and Viren have dedicated years to memorization that is why they can wield it so easily. And lest we forget Claudia was able to use primal magic with the stone by using a sigil learned by heart.

I'm rooting for him partially out of spite. It seems that no matter what he does, the narrative portrays him as being In The Wrong, whether he is trying to talk Harrow out of starving his own people, or warning the other kingdoms to prepare for the worst because Xadians are sharpening their swords.
He's the kind of character who in other show would be that lonely sane man telling those idle nobles to look beyond their castle doors. But since this is a happy kiddie show he's portrayed as selfish and needlessly paranoid unlike the wise-beyond-their-years little kids.

We don't know how many spells in primal magic Claudia knows and even then, she had a primal stone - a specifically rare item that there likely aren't many of.
In addition, the incantations for dark magic is just what you want the spell to do spoken backwards. The incantations aren't intricate and they don't require a sigil to use.

Dark magic is easier than primal magic.

I am with you anon. And I would have been pissed off too if a 12 year old was giving me lip about her being the only rational one. She hasn't seen shit compared to Viren and then goes on to lecture him. It is easy to be an idealist when you are sheltered. Idealism is great but not practical and will kill 100,000 people to maintain.

Viren is just asking the kingdoms to prepare for a war not start one. I mean for fucks sake they were going to assassinate one of the kings. Sun Elves are on the borders en mass attacking human outposts.

Aspero and the lightening spell we see Callum use aren't all that strong and even Viren with the primal stone was enhanced by his staff.
While it did manage to pin Thunder for a moment it wasn't enough to do it for long.

With primal magic you have to remember variations of the spell too, activation words and connect to an arcanum. To a human, the final thing is that list was considered to be impossible without a primal stone.

Elf are not pacifist and misunderstood in this story, They are shown trying to take a human fortress in the frontier and killed the a king. But somehow Viren is shown to be in the wrong for trying to prepare for war.

Dark magic, with a small reagent and a simple incantation, has been shown to be uniquely powerful compared to ordinary primal magic.

They've given at least two examples of it doing great good - preventing famine and healing Soren, but it has a cost that does not exist with primal magic. It's a dangerous tool, and likely one that does not need to actually exist as we see with Callum being capable of primal magic.

As for it's ease, obviously natural primal casters have it easiest and are a bunch of elitist pricks about it, but the real comparison is for human users. Primal magic needs a primal stone (or this hippy dippy enlightenment business) to achieve anything at all. Dark magic can use far more common, albeit still rare materials and doesn't need none of this spiritual nonsense. It's pure rote memorization. It is easier than trying to get a primal stone, trying to figure out that arcanum shit or just not using magic at all like that dumbass Harrow wanted. Ignore when the elves say it's easy; by now it should be clear to anyone with half a brain that the elves are assholes and don't know what they're talking about.

Dark magic is power, and is used too often as a crutch to achieve things and solve problems you probably shouldn't have gotten yourself into in the first place. Harrow shouldn't have offered crops he didn't have, He shouldn't have tried to kill Thunder, Soren shouldn't have fought a dragon and gotten his fucking back broken, etc. This is what is really meant when the show tells you dark magic is a shortcut.

3)Had a near-death experience where he was forced to put all togheter in order to survive. (Spirit)

I doubt that many of they even have the knowledge of what is an arcanum; they don't need it in Dark Magic.
Only elves use primal magic and the dont teach humans.

It wasn't the Moon Sorceress, it was Harrow in his letter explaining the background to the glow cube that detects primal magic. It's called Aravos's Key, I think, and Harrow says supposedly Aravos was a master of all the primal magics.

Which was sort of the first clue that one, or no, primal sources aren't set in stone, though presumably everyone thinks he just used storms in orbs and so forth.
