This alongside the implications, really confirmation honestly, that Aaravos was the one who gave humans Dark Magic, it's probable that the human potential for "real" magic has been purposefully hidden from the world for some nefarious reason. In fact, probably everyone, human, elf, dragon, can connect to any primal source given the right situations and mentality. It's just that it involves learning a sort of alien thought process to what you were born with, akin to the process of spiritual enlightenment. Most magic beings already have a connection and feel no need for another and humans were given the easy out of Dark Magic and so never thought they could do anything else either. There's still some holes, like how exactly you get things like storms in orbs, but still.
People have bitched about the show being too down on humans, but considering the show runner have talked about the human diaspora from Xandia being like a trail of tears when season 1 came out, it's likely there was always going to be a more complicated background to what was up with humanity. And we're starting to see that now, with the reveal that it wasn't some human mage who came up with Dark Magic.
I always felt like the fact that people kept insisting stuff in the show as being true was just people in the show not knowing the truth. Things always felt off based on what we saw in the show. And I'm more willing to give the show writers that benefit of the doubt now with season 2 revealing what it did.
