I was expecting it to head towards a generic and common "pride comes before the fall" lecture where Bolin learns he was all wrong and ends up losing everything he had. But instead, Mako ends up on a time-out in jail, while Bolin solves the crimes and takes the credit in front of an adoring public.
And expanding on what you said: it's weird when you look at where Mako and Bolin started out, and how they turned out at the end of the series. Considering Bolin's comic relief moments in Book 1, I wasn't expecting him to end up as the brother who has more success in his private and professional life.
The writing of LoK had a lot of stuff I could complain about, but I suppose I kinda liked how the story sometimes strayed away from the expected direction and took off towards a path I really didn't see coming.
