Her being a flying brick is also an important callback to the 90s era, including the cartoon, when the X-Men were in their Renaissance.
It also fills out Carol's lacking rogues gallery, and heel-face turns are fun.
But perhaps most importantly, it serves as a bridge between the Avengers and the X-Men, which has to hold a ton of appeal.
The danger in depowering a strong female superhero, I would think, would be any perception of "misogyny". If a man took her powers, it would be hated. But if another strong female character took them, I don't think it would have the same problem. Even better because that whole story is full of strong female characters and a canon lesbian relationship from the comics, Mystique and Destiny.
