>>105758878We still run a Cold War foreign policy where Russia and Iran are our biggest foreign antagonists because under that set up the intelligence agencies and military bureaucrats hold large amounts of power and a lot of them hold neocon worldviews. Look at how they consistently tried to undermine Trump's talks with Kim in the run up to the summit last year.
Trump's foreign policy goals are very obvious: get us out of Middle Eastern quagmires and stop worrying so much about Russia as our real foreign enemy is China who's completely fucking us economically. It's obvious he intends to peel away Chinese allies (like North Korea) and bring them into the American fold and hopefully isolate and weaken them in terms of foreign policy while doing the same thing ot them economically with tarrifs and other shit.
The neocons who make up the upper ranks of the Eternal Bureaucracy don't want that though. They still believe our foreign policy goals should be controlling foreign oil supplies and thus global energy and Russia with their natural gas exports and support for countries in the middle east that aren't Israel (i.e. Syria, Iran, etc.) are a threat. They're wrong of course and if it was up to me we'd tell Israel to get fucked and probably try and slowly try to establish good diplomatic relationships with the Iranians.
Trump, as a business guy, has long held that our biggest enemies are not the military threats but the economic ones. You can find old interviews from the '80s and early '90s with him railing against Japan, Germany and the like who were doing to the United States at the time what China's doing now: flooding our country with cheaper goods while we export less for more. It's not a ludicrous idea either as that played a large part in British dominance in the 1800s and a big reason they hated Germany iwas because by the early 1900s Germany was doing the same thing and was on the verge of overtaking them as the world's leading economic superpower.
