I remember that the weird ass weight gain episode on youtube had the most views by a scary margin. Like 2.2 million to the usual 400k. People don’t really think about Kirby like that do they? Just because Sakurai created King Dedede, that doesn't mean he's the best person to play him. That's like arguing that Hideo Kojima should be the voice of Solid Snake, or Shigeru Miyamoto should be the voice of Mario. What a terrible justification for giving a character a lame voice.

I haven't found any of these funny since the Sailor Moon one. Too many of the segments are just clearly slightly-better-than-average animators looking to showcase their skills and being accurate to the original storyboard instead of having fun and being absurd.

Broadcast Standards & Practices, but they only have power over broadcast networks and not cable/satellite/streaming. A few 4Kids TMNT episodes also got banned from broadcast by BS&P but aired in other countries and got released on DVD.

This is amusing to me, because back when this cartoon debuted, all I can recall is the near-unanimous vitriol for the voice casting. Everyone hated Bayou Dedede and Inigo Montoya Knight.

Well, that's really a Nintendo thing in general. That hardcore across the board mandate they had from the late 90s through 2018 that none of their characters could have recorded dialogue in their games beyond brief sound clips and grunts. Even Breath of the Wild, when they finally relented, only gave dialogue to Zelda and Link still had to be a mute grunter. Or maybe it was Kid Icarus Uprising or Metroid Other M where they finally let one of their characters fuckin talk, but that's still a pretty recent development (they made the studio remove all of Samus' recorded dialogue in Metroid Prime because "Nintendo characters don't talk!" at the fuckin time).

Star Fox Adventures was allowed to have full recorded dialogue for the characters, but I think Star Fox was grandfathered in on that because the original SNES game gave the characters a lot of soundbytes, so it was expected of the franchise.

Nintendo is otherwise still stuck in the mindset that a player can't identify with the character in the game if that character has a voice and speaks in anything other than grunts and catchphrases.

Sometimes I wonder about Charles Martinet's Mario performance. He's been "playing" Mario since 1996, but I don't think he's ever spoken a complete sentence as the character. If he plays him in the upcoming Illumination movie, where he has to actually speak lines, it could potentially sound awful.

Super Mario Odyssey also gave the characters a lot more specific spoken lines, even if it was just nonspecific racial gibberish followed up by an actual word/name for everyone other than Mario and Peach.
Honestly, I think all of this with "Nintendo not putting voice acting into its game" can link back to Sunshine, I recall everyone making a huge mockery of it, especially Bowser.

I kind of feel some of this episode's humor is lost too, due to the nature of a collab like this. The whole joke of the final cartoon is "it looks like a piece of shit and nothing works right", and that fails to land when art styles are shifting and people are purposefully making things look bad for the sake of their own jokes.

An example, the joke where Dedede and Escargoon are drawn super handsome misses its mark when Dedede and Escargoon are drawn stylistically different every other animator of this collab.

Funny; the cast of Kirby Right Back At Ya were all non-union (4Kids used mostly the same actors as Funimation). And you know, watching the Re-Animated video, when those voices aren't attached to stiff and awkward anime footage, the cast's performances are actually a lot better than I remember them being. Dedede's Southern accent is great, Escargoon's Paul Lynde impression is perfect, and the guy doing the Ed Wynn impression for the cook character was really spot on.

I think it's just me but I didn't like how the anime had King Dedede the straight up antagonist. Sure he's incredibly silly about it but he constantly puts the people around him in danger which I feel isn't what Dedede is about. Dedede should be a prick with a heart of gold. He can be selfish at times but would still protect his people and planet when push comes to shove.

This episode was great not only from it's concept but it shows what an "antagonistic" Dedede should be: Selfish and egotistical but not remotely evil. If they ever make another anime I hope they have a better balance of selfish Dedede and the actual king who does care for his people.

Kitsune designs with the \ / eyes weren't something recognizable in the west at that point in time. Most westerners first exposure to that kind of design was the Keaton mask in Zelda 64. If you hadn't seen that kind of fox design before you could easily mistake the Pizza Cats character for a rat. (Doesn't excuse the fact he has a huge fox tail, but westerners didn't associate the color yellow with foxes. They associate it with cheese, which only makes him feel more like a rodent.)

Props for using the Ocean Dub as the primary audio and filling in the censored gaps with the Funimation dub, but most of it is a realy piece of shit. I think having to do re-animate collabs of 22-minute shows is a bad idea since it invites too many bottom tier talents and stretches the good ones out too thing. Re-animating shorts like Dover Boys or just segments like the Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue musical number are the best idea. You get the best animators and they can put more effort into their shorter turns.

SPC is probably one of those shows where the dub ended up being the better version. To my memory, the Japan version was a Sentai parody, but played more straight compared to the dub's constant ad-libbing.

Yeah, the Japanese and English versions of Samurai Pizza Cats are both comedies, it's just that the English version is funnier. A lot of it has to do with the localization of jokes (replacing Japanese pop culture references with equivalent Western ones), but the additional adlibbing also gives the English version MORE jokes than the Japanese, and nearly all of them are really good. Plus, the whole "we didn't have anyone to translate to scripts so the writers are just guessing at what the fucking plot is" aspect puts it over the top.

- They had an extremely, extremely poor portfoilo.

- They were part of the collab at one point and were removed because they missed deadlines etc.

- They tried to join the collab during the later stages when they were replacing missing scenes from people who didn't finish their work, when there would've been very few available scenes to do and they just didn't get picked.

Call me a DDD, but as a kid I absolutely hated "Right back at ya!" as a kid due to the mental image I had built up of Kirby from playing the games. I mean in the games, Kirby was this unstoppable force that could suplex enemies into oblivion, all in the pursuit of food.
But in the show Kirby is a retarded baby, that is largely incapable of doing anything on his own without motivation.

To a lesser extent I disliked the show because I hated deliberately "funny sounding" voice acting like Mantaro from Kinnikuman Nisei, so DDD and Escargoon were like listening to nails on a chalkboard.

Are you talking about the Funimation Lupin dubs from the mid 00s? Those were honestly pretty bad to mediocre and I couldn't get into the Dragonball Z cast as those characters. Lupin talks and all I hear is Krillen. Jigen talks and all I hear is Piccolo.

I heard the Pioneer/Adult Swim cast was going to come back to dub one of the newer Lupin shows or movies. Did that ever happen? Tony Oliver was the best Lupin.

Because Sakurai apparently doesn't like or want Shimomura elements so long as he's running Kirby. Such things never appeared again in the games (barring the odd minigame cameo) until Kumazaki came along and started going nuts with his "everything is connected" fanfiction.

As it stands, it only applies to Kirby and Zero, though Shadow Kirby and Dark Mind might also work the same way given the whole Mirror World thing.

I'll check the Blue Jacket series out, then. Even if they're playing it a little straighter than Part 2, that can sometimes work; their dub of Mystery of Mamo was straighter than their dub of Part 2 and still sounded great.

(incidentally, I also like the cast from the Manga Video dub of Castle of Cogliostro, needless cursing aside, and think they fit the more serious and classy tone of that film, whereas the Pioneer cast were perfect for the zany and sleazy antics of the Part 2 tv series)

The only thing we know is that the last boss is a baby that hasn't fully formed yet. The descriptions keep talking about how it could potentially turn good or evil. Throughout the battle, it keeps flipping between having a Kirby face and looking like Zero. My take on it is that it's a larval form of whatever Kirby/Zero's species is.

Forgot to mention something.
In each of the game's updates, the last area in the post game mode, "Guest Star Star Allies GO!", kept changing.
Everything started flipping upside down and falling apart, and there was a pool in the middle reflecting different areas - Hyper Zone in Wave 1, Dark Star in Wave 2, and Another Dimension in Wave 3.
In the Wave 3 version, the main villain Hyness gets sucked into the pool, kicking off the OTHER post-game mode, Heroes in Another Dimension.

I see no reason why they wouldn't still be the same species. They may have all been like Kirby earlier in their lives in that they were more adaptable with copy abilities, but eventually settled on one ability to focus on and improve. It's just that the examples we've seen all focused on swords or a lance.

Star Warriors are only a thing in the anime, the game has an entirely different lore involving all of the games from Dark Matter, Clockwork Stars, the Dimensional Mirror, and more. Ironically Nightmare doesn't have a major hand in any of it, but I suspect Kumazaki, the director in charge of the main games for 11 years now, will go in that direction. There isn't any crucial thing going on with King Dedede unless its getting possessed, kidnapped, or cloned, but he has been getting more antagonistic and villainy in the spinoff games recently.

In Kirby's Dreamland, the manual states Kirby is a young child "Dreamlander", and the ending implied there was a whole race of Kirbys. In some games player 2 gets to be Keeby, a yellow Kirby.

But I'm sure now they've retconned it so Kirby is a completely unique entity, and can handwave the Kirbys from Dreamlands ending as being Waddle Dees/Doos who were brainwashed or something, because they have the exact same shape.

Some people speculate Dedede could be a descendant of the ancients who built the fountain of dreams and star rod, because blue and yellow seems to be a recurring color motif for people related to them. There's not really a whole lot of evidence for it at this point, though.

Yeah, Super Star actually already did that in Spring Breeze a remake of Dreamland. You get multiple Kirbys for the tutorial theater scenes, but they changed the one level intro cutscenes that showed multiple Kirbys to feature only one and colored the crowd from the ending as Waddle Dees rather than Kirbys.

Shitloads of free DLC. It was very obviously rushed to meet a deadline (you can hear this in interviews where they talk about how the went with character designs for the villains that would allow them to share similar details); the game has boatloads of playable characters, music has been added to where the soundtrack is now incredibly full, there's been gameplay modes added like a tougher boss rush and pretty substantial (and decently tough) endgame scenario which adds a nice little cap on the story.

Honestly the simple matter was dev support. They could have very easily left the game as is or charged for this, but instead they updated the game for free and now its a very solid game.

I think interest in them is going to drop immediately after this one. The DKC one will probably be the last major one, and after it comes out it'll become clear you can't just apply this treatment to everything. I don't think Dover Boys or Cartoon All-Stars were shit or anything; it's hard to measure "shit" in these sorts of collabs when so many animators are "animating badly on purpose to be ironic". I think we're just going to hit an oversaturation point soon. The novelty is just about worn out and when 3 or 4 new ones all about to hit in rapid succession, the diminishing returns are going to do the whole trend in pretty soon.

As you said, it would take possession of people and animals, changing them into monsters that had to be defeated to be saved.

I think near the end of that season or series, Dedede would be the last one to be possessed, and be the most powerful. After he's saved, we'd get some character development from him, like how he didn't feel respected by his subjects (thus hiring monsters to make them fear him), and how he was jealous of Kirby's fame.

Dedede would actively help defeat the final boss alongside Kirby, and would be on good terms with him.
