>>105246695DC started with the two biggest heroes, Batman and Superman, but very little else.
Marvel had a fairly big hero (Spiderman), but really before the MCU got started, a lot of people had never heard of any other Marvel characters. However, Marvel had a lot of interesting mid-level characters.
When CGI finally got good enough to be compelling, all that DC had to offer was 1. Batman, and 2. some characters that a lot of people viewed as having an archaic superhero feel to them: Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern.
In contrast, Marvel was able to do a lot with Spiderman but also introduce to a lot of moviegoers some compelling characters that they had never heard of, all of which had a more modern feel: Iron Man, Thor, Wolverine, Dr. Strange, etc. Each of them wouldn't have been able to sustain a movie without CGI, but with CGI, there was enough there to allow them to crank out multiple movies with different interesting characters with interesting backstories. Plus, the movies felt fairly separate from each other. If one was a flop, it didn't taint the others.
