Honestly I'd say it might be some kind of religious significance to the fusion of differing gems, given how they refer to their base as a temple. I guess you can make a cult around sex, the romans had them and so do the californians, but it seems doubtful sucrose would have thought of it that way.

Somehow the ability of unalike gems to form into extremely superior, strange beings is morally offensive to the diamond godqueens of homeworld.

Honestly I’d say Garnet is the most to blame for that fiasco.

Connie did push Steven into dancing, but the fusion was still an accident (albeit a completely foreseeable one) and more importantly she is still a fucking child and somewhat liable to do stupid shit.

Theoretically things would probably have gone slightly less catastrophicly if Stevonie had just defused when Yellow demanded it.

But then Garnet had to fuse because she has fucking tunnel vision when it comes to fusion and doesn’t know how to back down for the sake of pragmatic damage control like a fucking pseudo-leader and designated adult should.

Amethyst and Pearl basically just joined in to back up the rest of the group at that point.

More specifically, since Garnet’s components were defused when they made the decision to intervene, this was mainly Sapphire’s fault, since has a slight pass for being Ruby generally kind of hot-headed and dumb, and unlike her she has goddamn future vision!

What the hell Sapphire.

People who work on the show have said it's symbolic of any of kind of personal connection you have with another person, be it platonic or romantic. If you look at what's in the show you can see that's clearly the case. If we take the "Fusion is sex" hypothesis to it's logical conclusion, lots of stuff in the show becomes disturbing and nonsensical:

Everyone is entitled to their headcanons, but the showrunners have stated that the premise of fusion is representation of "not strictly only romantic" relationships.

I like the beginning of the show. The first episode os very memorable, as Steven has his mom's rose canon destroy a giant ship at the end of the episode. The beginning episodes are famous for the catch-phrase "If every pork chop were perfect, we wouldn't have hot dogs!" I wish they used that catch phrase more often. Anyway, I have no problem with the main character starting off at near zero. I watched Naruto and My Hero Academia, after all.

There are two official reasons why they are off model so much. 1. Rebecca Sugar is literally a fan of Ed, Edd, and Eddy, and she literally wanted to copy their cartoonish artstyle and aesthetic. She turned what could have been nice wood smoked samon into a crappy salt and acid baked salmon, if that makes sense. No offense to anyone that likes salt cooked or chemical cooked fish. 2. The artists wanted to be lazy. It's more cost effective also.

I can tell you but you're not gonna like it: edited for time. They want the fusion-on-homeworld story but they don't have a whole season to work on it. They also didn't have a lot of eps to create a relationship between Steven and Yellow&Blue Diamond. They had to condense a season or two's worth of episodes into less than half a season, so it's rushed as fuck and barely plausible. The moment he got off his throne, Yellow and Blue would have been shouting at him for his impropriety, not waiting to see what the fuck he was doing, but they needed a reason for him to be in trouble and they wanted fusion to be pushed to the forefront, so both were accomplished in this hacky scene.

Sugar gives a lot of information about the show in the official podcast, but people who like to complain are generally not the same people who follow the show that closely.

Fusion is a metaphor for relationships and Garnet and Rainbow Quartz are the only that are overtly romantic.

Also, fusion dances with Garnet are sensual because Garnet represent love.

Literally every other fusion is platonic. Malachite's case was a literal abusive power struggle.

Remember, Steven basically has 3 moms, Garnet, the stern, but but compassionate one, Amethyst, the cool, sister-like one, and Pearl, the overbearing helicopter parent that won't let him do anything. It was only very recently that any of them viewed him as someone capable of making his own choices, and fusion is a choice.

Just like they did an awful job with Lapis' overall character, the whole of Malachite, Peridots character after S2, all the recent shit gem designs, Stevens character degradation going from "that's why we have to fight them!" in Jailbreak to being chummy with the Diamonds who mutated their own troops and commited genocide and created the rape clusterfuck and lastly all the flavor of the month gems that come for 1 episode and fuck off forever after showing the quantity over quality mindset the crew has when it comes to their characters.

If Peridot had strong platonic relationships with Steven and Amethyst then the concept of fusion wouldn't be as taboo as it's presented from her perspective but instead a new layer of understanding her friends at a deeper level.

Instead heterosexual gem fusion is presented as this intimate overtly sexual act that several times promotes the same reaction that someone would expect a parent would act when their child is exposed to something risque or shameful, like Pearl covering Steven's eyes for Amethyst and Garnet's fusion dance into Sugilite.

Before it didn't seem that way as much, Opal is a great step in the direction of saying it's not really gem sex but something more alien to our human sensibilities. But you have moments like Pearl flaunting fusion (sex) with Rose in front of Greg, the reaction of Pearl tricking Garnet into Sardonyx fusions and the meltdown of Garnet in response to it, Flourite speaking of finding more gems for her fusion as finding 'the right one' like someone would talk about finding a new romantic partner, etc. Out of all the fusion examples Opal, Alexandrite, Smoky Quartz, and the Ruby Unions lack the sex subtexts of intimacy underlining the others.

Homeworld already knows the CGs fuse. The problem is that not only did they fuse in front of the entire ball, creating an example for the Diamond's courts, they continued to do it in open defiance of the diamonds. The two Homeworld gems that fused after the CGs did it and saw it as validation are proof enough of what the diamonds are afraid of.

It's a little confusing, but it's less a case of getting the sizes wrong, and more the failure to draw the floor or feet properly to show distances. That's not really equivalent, if you factor in the power imbalance in the environment, and the live audience the event had. They didn't just fuse in front of the Diamonds, they showed a court full of the Diamonds' followers their fusion, not only of different classes, but also of different species. The Diamonds exert control over their empire through that class structure, and separation of gems of different roles. Everything the Crystal gems do, from their protection of organic life, to fusion of different gem types, to gems choosing roles other than the one they were made for is a direct challenge to the Diamond's authority, their system for expanding their people, their social structure. Remember, they never went to Homeworld on the grounds that they saw eye to eye on everything, just that they both wanted to undo the gem corruption.

Isn't the equivalent of fusion more like what happened in Jimmy Neutron when they 'fixed' the body swap episode? Both characters minds were dropped inside a giant tub that intermingled before being sorted into the two different bodies again, that's about as close as you can get to know someone without the act of sex being involved. The show doesn't treat it as a very invasive personal thing either, though, so maybe that's the problem in SU.

The only real nerf it got was that it requires context in order to work (which is arguably not even a retcon since they already explained it's not REALLY seeing the future, just predicting based on context). It's why Garnet never knew that Rose was Pink Diamond, because nothing ever happened like that before in the history of gem kind. Same goes for Steven being more and more independent over time that wound up in Garnet trying to force herself back into the loop in Pool Hopping.

People wouldn't consider fusion just a sex metaphor if the writers would stop using fusion as a sex metaphor. More often than not, it mirrors romance writing + sex allegories than it doesn't.

Steven and Connie fuse cause they're SO IN LOVE.
Ruby and Sapphire fuse cause they're SO IN LOVE.
Greg wants to fuse with Rose because he's SO IN LOVE.
Rose and Pearl fuse so Pearl can act like a smug bitch to Rose's love interest like it's a love triangle.
Jasper gets on her knees and begs to be with Lapis like they're an abusive couple to each other.
Garnet and Pearl demonstrate a fusion for Steven in which Garnet throws Pearl against the wall and Pearl looks like she's literally about to get fucked.
Garnet and Amethyst do a fusion dance where Garnet opens up her legs and Amethyst jumps inside.
Garnet feels violated that Pearl "tricked" her into fusion, saying it's only meant to be special!!!
Garnet tells Peridot it's okay if she's not ready to fuse for the first time, she can do it when she's ready. The type of language one only uses to virgins.
Ruby asks Sapphire if she liked "their first time" fusing, the type of language one would only use for first time sex.
Ruby and Sapphire fuse in front of Gems and they all act disgusted, an allegory for homosexual relationship reactions, which is an intimate (not platonic) relationship.

It's insane how fucking often they use fusion as a sex parallel but then try to back off and say, "I-it's for any relationship!". If that's the case, then they're writing fucking sucks because about 80% of the time, it's a straight up allegory for sex and homos. Just because characters like Opal exist doesn't negate the hundreds of other times where fusion = basically sex.

If this show was more cleverly written, they might be able to have us believe it. No one ever mistakes DBZ fusion for sex. But it's so on the nose, I can't believe people deny it.

The only thing I ever liked was the strange situation regarding gem stuff and it's relationship to the alternate earth (and humans) of the setting. It was unclear the full extent of what effect gems and gem stuff had on earth and people, and a chunk of the early show was about exploring that. It was really interesting to see what effects or changes this rock-lady race had on the earth, and how people reacted to or regarded them.

Eventually though, the creators end up just divorcing humans/earth and gems/homeworld from one another in terms of the plot. More and more gems and gem stuff happen without any real connection to earth, and humans end up having no connection to any of it because humanity as a whole just seems to have become utterly retarded. No more is it a story about some remnants of an ancient and seemingly collapsed alien race trying to scrape out a meager hidden living on earth, and their relationship with humans who have risen up and built a world around the remnants of this alien race. Instead the alien race turned out to actually be entirely active and thriving the whole time (earth was just strangely "forgotten" by them), the main characters focus more and more on the external alien gem stuff with decreasing care or attachment to earth in terms of plot (and thus earth becomes increasnigly mundane and boring by comparison to any gem stuff), and the humans turn into blitherting retards who currently and apparently always have regarded this strange alien race with disinterest at best and dismissal at worst. Early show, some of the best episodes are seeing fantastical gem stuff impacting people's lives, and how humans and gems interact with and regard one another and their respective worlds. Later show, earth-centric and particularly human-centric episodes are far and away the worst of the entire series.

So if you're anything like me, you won't enjoy it. Maybe watch the first season only and that's it.

I even mentioned Opal in my post. Just because they have a couple of "it's not sex!" fusions, doesn't overwrite the overwhelming amount of times the show DOES use it as a metaphor for romantic intimacy.

I didn't say that fusion can't be a general relationship metaphor, but that the writers aren't doing a good enough job balancing that out with all the sex symbolism.

A lot of people ship Amethyst and Pearl. Very few ship Amethyst and Steven. That’s why I feel Smoky Quartz is a more unambiguous example.

But yeah the lack of balance between non-romantic and romantic fusions is a valid criticism.

Would probably help if Steven fused with more gems, as most of his relations with them don’t really have any construable sexual undertones. (I guess some people still ship him with Lapis or Peridot)

It's used for representing relationships, usually romantic but it was clearly shown that they don't have to be and since they aren't humans and don't have sex or reproduce the metaphor doesn't have to be exact. How difficult is it to admit that a fusion of two gems is exactly that, a fusion and any metaphors are exactly that, metaphors. It's not sex, it's not even an actual relationship, it's two creatures combining to create one which is not something that happens in reality, and because of the way it's treated where it's only allowed in certain ways and settings it's a convenient way to illustrate real world issues the show wants to address. Showing characters randomly fuse with their friends wouldn't fit into the story at all. It's fiction telling a fictional story while also poking at real world, not your parents failing to give you the talk with a bad metaphor.

It's a metaphor for sex in some scenes, but it's also not. Sardonyx is both a metaphor for sex, but also a metaphor for taking advantage of people who trust you in any way. Opal is basically a powerup and Malachite is an abusive relationship, at most you could argue that Opal is a fake relationship for some material benefits but that seems to be reading too much into it. Garnet is a pretty clear metaphor for a gay relationship but Stevonnie isn't really a metaphor for anything, just an element of the fiction and a straightforward fusion of two children who are friends.

SU is a very divisive cartoon, probably the most divisive in recent memory. It's not nearly bad as people exaggerating, but it's not as perfect as the other side likes to exaggerate either. It's in the middle. Low 7 or a high 6 at worst, low 9 at best. Latest arc has been pretty consistently good so it has that going for it at least.

You do realize using baby's first insults doesn't actually mean you have a point, right? For every one platonic relationship fusion you throw at me, I can throw you three examples of them using it as a metaphor for sex, which makes it very easy to understand why the audience thinks it's a metaphor about sex when the show itself mostly uses it as such.

If the writers didn't want viewers to interpret it as such, they should have re-written things to better push it. For example, Garnet should not be using language like, "Your first time" to Peridot, which was not romantic. Amethyst and Garnet should not have been doing an incredibly lewd dance for Sugilite, which was non-romance. There are more instances where they could have tweaked things to make it non-sexual, but they still chose to anyway, which only muddled up their own metaphor.

Why did the fusion of those two green gems make an off-color, multi-armed freak? I thought you only got those when gems of different types fused, the two unnamed gems in that episode were the exact same color/shape/rock.

The whole "Fusion is sex" meme misrepresents the bigger picture. Relationships can be romantic, yes they can involve sex, and arguably some people give the most value to romantic relationships. But in the end, fusion represents the entire spectrum of relationships, including the platonic ones. I think a big portion of it is that they're tackling very complicated POVs and issues and writing them for a children audience. It's like that unicorn PPG episode where the entire point was leading up to the horse needs to learn that just being a horse is fine and give up on his dream of being a unicorn... but then somewhere down the line, a director or editor or whoever screams, "NO! Kids won't get it! Give the horse a happy ending where he finds out he was secretly a unicorn the whole time!", so it fucks up its own message.

Either that, or the SU crew is tackling issues and POVs they themselves don't know how to address properly, so they're piling on single pieces of imagery with like, 50 metaphors. Like Stevonnie is supposed to be love, and friendship, and acceptance, and positive trans representation, as well as serving a narrative purpose of being a strong character who has Connie and Steven's powers and it's just a fucking too many cooks scenario. It's very confusing to have a character who represents both relationships (multiple) and transgender people (individual). Like, I don't know, stick with one or the other. Don't hodgepodge both.

They really need to start post-it-noting their own intended metaphors and make sure not to deviate from them if they're going to have such complicated ones like that.

Malachite is an abusive/toxic relationship, not a sexual one. They both crave the power and codependency. If you see sexual undertones in that, that says more about you than it does about Sugar. But she'd probably be ok with that interpretation because that's the point of an open ended metaphor.

Stevonnie is two KIDS zzzzzzz. She's been described as experiencing those awkward firsts in kiddie relationships as well as puberty iirc. Not a metaphor for two children having sex unless you're just REALLY into that.

Fluorite is like the least sexually appealing thing in the series, she's just a polyamorous relationship, not a walking orgy.

I can see the Jades being like Garnet in private, but not on a dance floor. She was literally just the coming out metaphor that immediately got stomped on.

Sugilite and Sardonyx themselves aren't sexual, but the fusion dances (only in their debut episode mind you) to create them have heavy undertones because Garnet is a slut.

Amethyst is several hundred to several thousand years old. Not explicitly stated but she's old enough to have been on earth for a few hundred years. In point of fact, she is shown to do exactly that. Before Steven was born - when Amethyst and Greg first met they hung out a lot. She spent a lot of time interacting with Greg. She showed the ability and propensity to learn Human culture and, well, did. She learned a lot about humans and spent time with Vidalia as a model for her paintings, and watching a lot of sitcoms and tv would have clued her into something very important for humans:
That sex between an adult and a child is massively unacceptable in human society. This kind of lesson is taught on TV and special episodes a lot. Particularly sitcoms of the 80's and 90's where they talk about sexual abuse and what kind of touching in inappropriate. To say that Greg and Amethyst never had the conversation or it was never brought up is disingenuous. THAT ASIDE: Amethyst most assuredly has been shown to be in contact with humans and familiar with them and interacting with them since the 19th century, ala Buddy's Book. If it is, then that means Amethyst is unequivocally, unapologetically, and knowingly a pedophile and is sexually abusing Steven. There is ZERO reason that of these three, NONE knew better and NONE of them had the opportunity to learn what a horrible thing that is for children.

So I balk at the conclusion:
If Fusion is sex, Amethyst is a child diddler and Pearl and Garnet groomed Steven. Do you still believe that fusion is sex, then? Is that allegory still something you're comfortable with? Because if so, then you have to follow the conclusion that Amethyst fucked Steven. And that raises serious >implications.

The first 26 episodes are quite good, to me. It's not about knowing better than her, it's about just how many points of interest it killed at once: the entire background for the war, including who shattered pink and why, Rose's background, identity and why she did all she did, Rose's relationship with PD, PD's background and her role/stance on the conflict prior to shattering, and possibly more i'm forgetting. And notice that I said "twist" because it wasn't very subtle, Rose had way too many powers to be just some regular gem (more powers than a fusion like Garnet when you think about it), including OP stuff like cure and giving life, so it was even from early on a twist many people saw coming the problem isn't the twist itself, it's the delivery, it's finding out all I listed was caused by the gem equivalent of a teenage girl rebelling and running away cause it's forbidden and cool. It was just underwhelming as all fuck.
I'd rather Sugar stuck with the subplot raised during the interrogation in HW of how only someone close to pink could have shattered her. It wouldn't have been the most original subplot ever but it would have been more interesting than this.

This show's just a trainwreck in slow-motion for me at this point. I used to get excited for new episodes, but once the Cluster Arc came to a close, it felt like lot of the magic was gone for me. So much potential is being wasted here, but I at least want to see how it ends.

Gem stuff becomes more involved in all townie episodes like it was during the first season

Steven goes into corrupted gems minds to heal them instead of continuing with the plot thread of trying to befriend all the diamonds so they'll heal them, and he finally gets to witness different POVs of the war through their memories

Jasper returns and reacts realistically to the fact that her entire life is a lie, gets pissed at Pd instead of getting over how she and everyone else got fucked over by her in the span of an episode, and becomes an antihero rather than a CG, everyone stops sucking Pd's dick in general, Nephrite and Pd's other gems remain more neutral too

The writers don't throw all self awareness out the window by putting the blame for everything on Wd and turning her into the only big bad that everyone else has to work together against just to make redeeming the other diamonds easier

Steven starts a second rebellion against the diamonds but this time he tries to save all homeworld gems and doesn't fuck everyone over by lying to them and secretly fighting a war against himself like Pd did, plot goes space opera, homeworld becomes more threatening and there are losses, but the rebellion is mostly successful, and it ends with all the diamonds being exiled from the galaxy for their crimes (this sadly almost certainly isn't going to happen)... or there is a reveal that White Pearl had overpowered and outsmarted Wd and has been controlling her ala the wizard of OZ ever since Pd broke her and left her behind (or whatever happened between them), she has a master keikau to get back at "Pink" and teach the other diamonds a lesson for mistreating lower class gems, and Steven apologizing to her for what Pd did is what gets her to calm down, this reveal is what makes the diamonds finally open up to respecting other gems and change (it might be divisive but I think something along those lines would be better than Steven talk no jutsuing genocidal tyrants)

Oh come on you know what I mean, during the episode the implication was clearly that one of the diamonds did it because nobody would suspect them and Pink would let her guard down around them, or at least that Rose was very close to Pink. They twisted it to be pearl which obviously also fits the narrative, but that is not what I meant and is much less interesting, doubly so because pearl was just going along.

Fusions are sometimes portrayed as sensual, sometimes discussed with sensual undertones, but the existence of a fused gem embodies the general relationship of its components, which I feel is viewed as more than the sexual act itself. HW considers the act disgusting because it's a creation of a new being capable of individual thought that does not adhere to the rigid caste structure of HW's system. We can say a part of that disgust is relatable to one's reaction to sexual intercourse, but a fusion gem is more akin to a shared idea of a group of people acting in unison of a shared cause, rather than just someone sticking their penis in another's orifice.

Does that make sense? Or is just easier to laser focus on the sexual act, since that gets more (you)s?

Sorry, I mean the implication to the viewer. Yes, Zircon was incorrectly and brashly suggesting that the two Diamonds present in the court hearing were suspects. To us, it leaves the conspicuous absence of White as a point of suspicion, and Yellow and Blue as red herrings of sorts. Pink's suicide was also suggested many times in my previous discussions back then, but I'm not sure how we came to that conclusion other than assessing the possibilities, of which suicide was one of the more interesting ones than the idiots who were still considering Yellow or Blue as culprits.

Unfortunately you are probably right, I will be disappointed if it does though. I've been waiting to critique the current direction of the show until after the season finale airs, because even though everything following ASPR has strayed from what I was hoping for from the Pd reveal, there is still potential for things to go a lot of different ways.

If the plot with the diamonds and homeworld is to become forever fucked, all I will want is more development for the major gems, because a lot of them have been on the verge of becoming background characters ever since season 3 ended. Everyone outside of Pearl only got a couple of really half assed episodes dedicated to them this season. Lapis' two episode long arc and out of the blue decision to become a CG was a disservice to her character, Bismuth's return was rushed and unceremonious, Ruby and Sapphire's marriage was pointless, Peridot and Amethyst are still sidelined, and Jasper is still shelved.
