I never really got why they held it in such high regard.
The first movie was ok, Ra's is plan was nonsensical at best.
Second movie was great, well conceived themes and legit suspense.
Third movie was pretentious and as nonsensical as the first.

I also don't get how they could ignore all the Man Of Steel criticisms, ignore the fact BvS had even more criticisms, and still let Synder have his way with Dawn of Justice.

Everyone wants to be Marvel but no one wants to put the work in. Marvel introduced characters and arcs slowly one by one over the course of a decade. Its had its hiccups, like Gwyneth Paltrow being the only love interest to stick around beyond two movies. but they kept at it. Everyone wants to be Marvel now that they don't remember what it took to get there.

The issue is Zack Snyder is a hack. He made a film with conscious, thought provoking ideas, but didn't seem to understand a single one of them and just made it all seem somehow both pretentious AND stupid.

You can't kill off your central character before the audience is given a reason to care if he's gone.
You certainly can't do that and them bring him back as evil before even selling people on the idea that he was all that good to begin with.
Snyder's 5 film plan was stupid from its inception.

Nothing is really official, but chances don't look good for him. He and his agent want to be paid like he's Christopher Reeve despite his movies underperforming. WB doesn't necessarily want to keep any Snyder reminders. Cavil picked up the Witcher in a power play attempt to to pressure WB to paying him for a cameo in Shazam since he has like 1 more movie obligation in his contract(?) Affleck is definitely going to be out since he's a liability.

The issue is, there was not ENOUGH of Superman to see how he grew, I loved 'Man of Steel' truly, but you can see why people are not fond of it and how much Snyder got wrong.

For example, Jonathan died saving the dog to teach Clark that all life is worth seeing, as one day, Clark would be powerful enough to see us as mere animals, as mere ants. Jonathan HAD to instill that these things are worth sacrificing ourselves for. The translation of this on screen was god-damn awful and just looked like he committed suicide for no reason.

The audience has to CARE about your main character, we cared about Frodo, we cared about Sherlock, we cared about Batman... no one overly cared about Supes because we weren't given a chance to.

Which is a damn crying shame as Supes deserves a fantastic movie in this day and age.

I swear I remember reading Cavill confirming he was leaving because WB was dragging its feet on confirming a sequel to Man of Steel, and he didn't like the idea of just appearing in DC movies as simply cameos, but I guess there was no actual firm statement.

That said, it does seem like he's leaning on the "out" side, especially with the movie to Witcher, but hasn't pulled the plug yet.

The truth is if you're an actor you can't sit around through your 30s waiting for the call to that big tentpole. The contract he has with WB is only worth money to him if they're using him in films, and they're really not.

Compare him to Evans for a moment. Cap appears in 8 of the MCU movies so far released and will appear a final time (one appearance is an uncredited cameo). He's working; those movies came out over a space of seven years from 2011 to 2018. Three of them are Cap movies; six of them are headline roles for Evans.

In 8 years of his career, from the ages of 30 to 38, he will have appeared in 9 of the most financially successful and best-known movies ever made. He will never, ever, want for offers of work, he will never, ever, be so poor he cannot turn a shitty job down. He can make what he wants to make, good or bad, for the rest of his life - even if he doesn't get offers that appeal to him, he can do a Hamill and just muck around in kid's tv or whatever else makes him happy.

Cavill was in a Superman movie once, in 2013; he's appeared twice since then as Superman, in films it would be kindest to say were divisive among fans. He, too, will always get offers of work - but he won't get to pick and choose and he won't get or stay rich doing them. His second solo movie was originally slated for 2015, then pushed back (as Batman v Superman) to 2016; then his second solo was announced for 2019. As of late 2018, it's not even in production and his female lead thinks she's been dropped from the cast, and he's off being a Polish monster hunter on Netflix, and good for him. He's a tv actor at heart and I think he accepts that: he seems like a nice boy, genuinely able to put a smile on even when things are awful for him, and he deserves some fun. But he's gone from DC movies.

That's essentially what Reeves is planning to do with Batman hence setting it 20 years before MoS just to give him some room of creativity. Plus who the fuck knows when JL 2 will be on the horizon, by that time Ben Affleck might be a bigger out of shape mess than he is currently. it's just smarter to cast someone younger who can carry the role for a longer term.

Etrigan and Spectre would have trouble making it past Chinese censors making it unlikely to ever be made. On the plus side, if they ever are green lit there is a fair chance they can get R rated movies since producers would know they won't have to deal with communist bullshit.

Too much melancholy and not enough man of hope or boyscout charme which gives you the feeling that everything will be allright.
I still think Cavill looks great as Superman but that's it.

We know Spidey from the other more modern movies. Love or hate them personally, both Garfield and Toby were loved by a wide variety of audiences and those same audiences still love a Spidey.

Holland also appeared in three, Civil War, Homecoming and IW. He was great in Civil War, Homecoming suffered a lot from being a big RDJ jack-off session but Holland was still good as both Peter and Spidey (that scene with 'Vulture' in the car, that was some intensity).

So yes, IW built on Peter from all of the above, a lasting successful image in audiences minds with a new fresh face to continue the mantle in a traditional fun Marvel way and one of the most important things.

He was a hero who was dying because they failed, there was no honour, no glory, no achievement or lives saved, or lessons learned and he WAS just a boy, on a stranded planet with Tony pretty much being the only sort of 'parent' figure around.

He was the only one who got to say 'I don't want to go' because Spidey senses, he knew what was happening, and Holland played that lost kid just trying to do the right thing so well. That clicked with audiences.

Supes dying to last minute deus ex villaina of the moment when we haven't been given time to appreciate or really see a modern Supes at all didn't help. DC movies seemed to be just filled with 'wtf-ery'. That leaves you cold, confused and uncaring.

When Supes should be the ONE character that instills hope, courage and all those happy things where you know everything will be okay.

As with Supes, as long as he's around everything WILL be okay. What makes 'Death of Superman' so iconic, is in that moment... nothing is okay anymore and no one is safe.

FIlm's did not capture that AT all.

He isn't an always joking Spiderman 2.0 but some lighthearted moments with a little bit humor would have been way better than Man of Grey.

The comic death of Superman was literally a filler event cooked up at the last minute to do something so the wedding in the comic would sync with the wedding on the tv show.

And it still had more of an emotional impact than Snydershit. Everyone remembers that scene where Superman is torn between keeping Doomsday busy and rescuing that kid, or how he struggles as hard as he can to keep him away from Metropolis, or how everyone watches him struggle to the end on television.

Snyder gutted the human element from Superman like he did Watchmen. He constantly conflates the baroque with the poignant in all his films.

What pisses me off so much about the Watchmen movie is that it is SO FUCKING CLOSE to being a perfect adaptation. Some scenes, like pretty much everything with Jon/Manhattan are perfect. Even the squid change, while a big deviation, is completely acceptable. The essence of the story is preserved.

But making the regular humans superhuman and making Adrian into a twink attacks the core message in two different but equally antithetical directions.

I hated how all the little normie character arcs from the kid and the newspaper man to the psychiatrist were either truncated or done away with. That scene of them all dying in New York was absolutely critical to the theme of the book.

Which Snyder of course dropped by showing Nixon’s caricature as about to push the red button instead of just having a standoff in the Mideast and making Adrian absolutely right when the point of the story was that Adrian was Note Owl and Rorschach on a larger scale and just as superficial illy effective in saving the world.

I guess Snyder’s boner for Randian heroics drove him to paint Adrian with a kinder hand.

Clark does good because his parents taught him the simple lesson that it's good to help your neighbors. The idea that they would suggest he shouldn'r help or he doesn't 'owe' anybody flies against the entire kind of story Superman is.

Helping shouldn't hardly ever turn bad for Clark. The idea is helping others simply because you can is good. A self centered dumb fuck Randian literally can't accept that.

All the major conflicts in MoS happen when someone attacks Lois and/or Martha.
He saves the world out of retribution rather than doing what needs to be done. Real Superman would have saved Pa, even if it meant damning his own life to misery. He wouldn't have hidden out for 30 years, doing petty things like destroying trucks.
The essence of Randian thinking is that everything is personal. And not like a "I have a great responsibility" but in a "You're trying to insult me" way.

I mean, Synder has actually said he is a Randian and is directing a Fountainhead movie as we speak, but even if didn't say these thing, it's still obvious in how the final fight in MoS happens.
The only part in that fight where Superman tries to help other people is right before he snaps Zod's neck. When Zod throws something at him, he just steps out of the way.
And when he does snap Zod's neck, and he finally saves Lois, they embrace in a giant crater in a giant city of dying people.
Why should this Supes care? He saved Lois. The rest of the screaming dying can fuck off

Having Pa doubt himself for a moment about (boy) Clark risk himself to save others is a fine moment. It of course should be followed up with a harder "No, you did a good thing".

Pa Kent taught Clark well, or else he wouldn't always be out there helping people. Did you mean Justice League? Either way, not really. You never get the sense that Batman and Superman get along, although Batman acknowledges the people need Superman. The most he says is "I don't NOT like you". Them actually hanging out in a non-action scene and getting along would be fun. I don't remember Batman ever repenting of his no kill rule. The problem with the Manhattan-Squid change is that while Manhattan being behind the attack might make more logical sense at a glance, any sort of critical thought shows the Squid makes more sense. The Manhattan false flag has a lot of fundamental issues behind it, namely Manhattan already working for the US. The Squid on the other hand is built from a number of different intricate plots. Adrian spent a lot of time, money, and resources constructing that conspiracy and it had a lot of working parts to make it all work as a proper conspiracy. An unknown alien threat makes more sense as a rallying point for mankind and Adrian compounded that with an aggressive marketing campaign to instill those sentiments. The Squid also works because of the psychic impression it left on the millions of people. Sure, just wanton destruction could have worked but giving all those people trauma helped sell the event as "real" and less inclined to doubt its origin.

Not to mention it being a comic book supervillain plot but done scarily effective is kind of the whole thematic point of it.

The Ultimate Cut was more of the fucking same, just unbearably long at three goddamn hours.

And the problem with JL wasn't that they brought on Whedon to "ruin" Synder's "vision", it's that the WB execs didn't start panicking until it was too late so Whedon had to try and basically Frankenstein a shitty movie into a good one but all he ended up doing was creating a tonal whiplash. I'm sure a JL movie made by Whedon from the beginning would be infinitely more better than the dumpster fires Synder had been making. That's not to say I'm a big fan of his Avenger movies, just that they wouldn't have been complete garbage like Snyder's movies have been.

He doesn't do humanizing things that paint him in a sympathetic light, like talking to suicide jumpers or visiting sick kids in hospitals. Those are considered unimportant fluff by Snyder, but they serve an important narrative purpose. They show the audience, and the characters in the story, that Superman is just a guy. Those actions are imitable by the common man, which is why it's important that Superman is seen doing them.
I mean fuck he only ever attempts to make a public statement 3 times. Once when he's in hand cuffs, once when he's issuing threats to the US military, and the third and final time when he's being called before the Senate and he doesn't even get a word out there.
It's no wonder people think he's sketchy or question his motives. He's never made an attempt at getting in front of the narrative.

And no, the news clippings don't show that. Putting aside the fact that you'd need to freeze frame to even get all of them, they're all based around him responding to accidents rather than connecting with people.
This is why one of the common criticism of the movie is that Superman is more plot device than character. Lots of people talk about him, not with him. He's got an obscenely low number of lines for a title character, much less a protagonist. After a point you can't excuse that with "actions speak louder than words".

It really depends on how much you think the movie hammered on Manhattan’s American nature. Snyder really downplays a lot of the implications of Manhattan being an American man vs. his own personal feelings of alienation, and I think that helps the idea that Manhattan can be painted as a threat to all of humanity rather than as an American weapon going haywire.

The Squid works better in the context of Watchmen as the Evangelion-esque logical conclusion to capeshit (at the time), but the bomb probably would make more sense in the context of the film. There just wouldn’t have been enough time to justify “huge psychic alien squid beast” when the imagery of the metaphorical atom bomb launched against the West gets the movie’s point across far more elegantly.

Imo Watchmen is a great movie and a decent adaption, whose main problems come less from Snyder’s inabilities to stop indulging his wankery and more from the inherent constraints of translating such a wide-spanning story into a feature length film (much a la Scott Pilgrim).

Which was three fucking hours of film, a lot of that stuff would have been on the cutting room floor regardless. Only one third is actually new footage and most is just small scenes to re-contextualize Snyder footage. The article itself says this, I don't get where you're getting this "They reshot enough for an entire film" bullshit when the evidence you provided contradicts that claim. This wasn't an entirely different movie, they basically took Snyder's movie and made a collage out of it. Notice most of the changes made were more focused on cut content and new contexts.

I just don't understand why you think the Snyder cut would have been substantially better. It might have been more tonally consistent, sure, but Synder had already proven himself a hack time and time again and this would have been no different. It would have been just another BvS. I don't think Whedon was the right director to bring on to replace Snyder but he has a far better track record and would have most likely done a more serviceable job if he was brought on from the beginning rather than having to sift through Snyder's garbage on a shoestring budget.

BvS already underperformed, Snyder Justice League would have likely done the same. It's kind of like how Bayformers started grossing less and less with each sequel so they brought someone new with Bumblebee to turn the franchise around. The difference here is that Bumblebee seemed to have been driven by Travis Knight pretty early on so even when they re-edited everything to make it more like a reboot compared to a prequel they had a lot more wiggle room to do it. Justice League was a failure because it didn't go far enough with the changes and said changes were often clumsy and looked cheap because they were done so late in production.

Bruce can't into basic human empathy for Superman until it's a direct one to one comparison of HIS shitty childhood.
Lois is Clark's world? Romantic platitude sure, but also a claim of possession.

Wonder Woman was trying to remain anonymous as always. She didn't want to get involved.
The speech about the horses is about how you shouldn't give up on helping people just because a previous attempt created a bad consequence that you didn't foresaw or intended. You shoulder the blame for it, even if you feel it isn't fair, and go back to being helpful. If it gets too tough, just count on your loved ones to support you, but never give up on being helpful.
Lois was used as a representation of the whole wide world, because she's the one who gives him hope and strength to keep going on. It's a statement to make clear that their relationship isn't a liability like Lois previously thought.

That's the only interpretation there is, since it motivated Clark to come back from his exile and be Superman hard enough he'd be willing to face the personification of his past failures/deformed version of himself (as created by Lex Luthor) and sacrifice his life for the sake of the world.

Yes, because it has to be his choice. He has to want to be Superman. Otherwise there's no point in spending his entire life doing something he hates if all it does is keep hurting him. He doesn't owe the world indentured servitude. He could just quit and be Clark Kent. Leave the world fix its own problems.

Because MoS was written by Goyer and Nolan, and the decision to use TDKR Batman came from executives, with BvS being written mostly by Goyer and later rewritten by Terio.
