Yeah, I never got that shit, either.
It was just so stupid with the writers going for different shit every other episode.
Finn and FP wasn't the greatest thing ever, but it was a cute thing that could have been either a long-term item cropping up occasionally, or have led to a big dramatic break.
But no. It ended with a wet fart of no meaning at all.
Most literally the worst option, narratively.

There was close to zero Bubblegum and Marceline shipping before Rebecca Sugar and some other artist associated with the show making picture of it kicked it off, Bubbline wasn't one of those "fandom ships" that get put into the show like Korrasami. The creators started it. Probably someone somewhere shipped it before their art and WWM but honestly I didn't see anything.

Yeah, this. Back in the day it was literally just Sugar, Allegri and like... maybe one or two fanartists drawing 2 pieces of fanart of the ship because they liked lesbian pairings. Then WWM made the pairing explode overnight.

Bubbline going as far as it did is almost certainly because of the fandom, but the fandom didn't start it.

This shit is a detriment to any show that includes it. It gives everything a meta edge that it shouldn't have, because it's still clearly about being a social message aimed at the "fandom" instead of being an integral part of the story.
