mechanical engineering is a hard job that pays more because you've got a shorter working life and higher risks of serious injury
theory is fine but like everything else it's undergoing wage suppression because there's so much computer assist now that you just don't need as many engineers to double-check everything, so there's fewer jobs and no, they don't just pool the money from the jobs they've cut
>>104398450medicine generally is also high-risk: you will be assaulted, there's risk of disease, there's a high burnout (check the dropout rates for any course you're thinking of taking), that means addiction is a high risk, and you're going to be sued anywhere from once or twice in your entire career to once a year or more depending on how many patients you see daily, so while you'll be insured for legal costs you need to understand the stress does not go away after you graduate
there's also constant retraining throughout your career, a minimum number of hours you need to put in in order to retain your right to practice, etc etc
it is not an easy life and it is not for most people
computer science will get you a job as a web monkey then, if you're any good, you'll get onto a company's training program and that will be how you get more money than the guy with the MFA running the McDonalds you'll visit daily
if you're just average you will not get the push and will eventually find something else, ironically, probably something in catering or the service sector
other than that you're going to be aiming for networking with a CS degree, or going into teaching; networking is a shitshow of other people's frustrations written as a giant pulsing rune of evil wifi and ethernet linking boxes of doom and things you really don't need to ever see
the best non-degree job you can aim for if you're young and have good health is airline pilot: you want (ideally) military pilot, because then you're a shoo-in when your ticket expires
