I fucking loathed this show's "comedy". The mystery and plot was good, but seriously every dramatic moment had to be undercut with some dumb unfunny zinger. "ironically" bad puns, just really unlikeable and smug low effort humor.
If the show took itself a little more seriously it'd be easier to ignore, but since its a comedy show pretending to be more than it is it just comes off as something afraid to be genuine, marked by "emotional" moments with all the subtlety of a brick to overcompensate.

This. It had enough interesting elements to keep it going but even moments like the fucking author reveal had to be ruined by Mabel saying "Is this the part where one of us faints?" then Soos does something that really gets the lawlz going because every episode needs to end on a goddamn joke, always good to ruin the one moment everyone waited the whole fucking series for.

Dipper took all the selfless acts and made his sister look like a monster for it. Dipper would act out and have stupid moments, but whenever the plot was on his side, suddenly he went to Messiah levels for how kind, empathetic and understanding he is.
The whole twins solving each other problems thing, arguably even if Dipper took Stanford's offer, Dipper might be looked after by Stanford, but Mabel would be doomed in high school and become the lonely weird girl.
Stanford's character was a plot device, and his gripes with Stan were petty. I was expecting the whole science project would get a reveal that it was done by the time guy. That never happened.
The over use of romance episodes from Dipper and Mabel, they're 12 and look like midgets. Still weird that Robbie and Tambry are together by love potion too.
Bill wasting away his villain time in weirdmageddon until the finale, his character just didn't have the same presence anymore.

Yeah, it would have at least been sweet if we'd seen something that indicated that Mabel wound up extremely loyal to Dipper at the end, but Alex only seemed to think about how the male characters actually looked to people.

It was shown again and again that Mabel's quirkiness made her a social butterfly. Dipper is the one doomed to being an awkward outcast. He could have jump-started his dream career with Ford, but I guess getting pity hugs from Mabel throughout high school is fine too. Happy ending.

Those are reasonable things to be mad about, the thing is he's not even mad about being cast out for 30 years, he got angry about being brought back. The two had childhood dreams about getting a boat and travelling together. Stanford was motivated by his parents and school board for being the smart one, to go for that direction. Stanley never sabotaged his project yet he was still kicked out, made homeless, living in a car and Stanford never bothered to check on him. Yet we're supposed to feel like Stanford not getting to go to his dream school but going to another was the heart breaker.

The only times mabel's bullshit were actually interesting were the pilot/first episode with the gnomes and the merman kid one, since they managed to weave it into the plot in an interesting way.

Mabel isn't actually shit. It's the entire writing around her that is shit. She's OK. She's not perfect, but she's not some kind of monster.

But writing seems to have almost pathological aversion towards making her face any kind of consequences of her poor judgement or moral failing. She walks into a failure, and the world around her twists and bends to take failure out of her way.

That's not exclusive to Gravity Falls, kids shows, or cartoons in general. The main issue stems from not wanting your character to be a gary stu but it comes off as "man, feel bad for me please" depending on how hard the insert is.

I wouldn't say self-deprecation is the thing here, that's the shit you find in tumblr girl web comic jokes like "haha... i suck... yea..." while they smile blankly in that "hide your inner turmoil" way. Fuck that shit.

I don't understand at all why Disney moved all their cartoons to Disney XD during 2014, they all got significantly lower ratings and it was probably the reason some of them ended prematurely.
They've recently went back on that decision and all their cartoons are coming back to Disney Channel, but it's too late since streaming is really starting to take over.

I liked it less for the humor and more for the genuine heart that doesn't feel fake like Nick Jr shit or undermined like in most older demographic crowds. Season 3 was supposed to put Wander's beliefs through some tests and I thought that sounded real damn neat, I despised Dominator but what she brought to Wander was interesting to me, and I wanted more of it.

Didn't Alex Hirsh confirm this in an interview?
Dipper is mainly based off of Ariel and a little bit of Alex.
Mabel is mainly based off of Alex and a little bit of Ariel.

Why? I mean I could see it happening even though Mabel has a life outside of Dipper, but that'd be because Mabel grows up to be that weird girl with some combination of borderline personality disorder, adhd, diabetes and so on who becomes socially isolated because she's a fucking nutcase who no one can stand to be around and she spends all her time drawing wolves in her notebook, and it's not like Dipper being there would stop that sort of decline.

The basic's of Bill's design and original personality are so meme-y and "kawaii" it doesn't matter what he actually did or didn't do to the fandom, in fact he had a huge fan following before he actually appeared. I agree that his first few appearances especially Sock Opera were way better and more entertaining than his shit in the finale though. there's a difference between being alpha and not being able to stand up for yourself or find the courage to do the right thing. Most main characters can do this, unless we're supposed to sympathize with them for their lack of courage, however this has become far too common a trend in modern day cartoons. Cartoons shape children a lot more than people are willing to admit, considering kids often spend hours in front of the tv paying more attention than they do in school. When you have a bunch of self-centered hypocritical and cowardly main characters made to be relatable children will fixate on this and try to be like them, relatable. I'm tired of these characters that are made to be relatable, self-deprecation just isn't that funny and frankly I think it's harmful to the young children who watch shows like these.

It really depends on what you're after.

If you enjoy wacky, lol-so-randumb hijinks, then Season 1 and parts of 2 are what you need.

If you're after a coming-of-age story about magical destiny, then Seasons 2 (3 less so) are what you need.

If you like political maneuvering and relationship drama, then Season 3 is the thing that provides it.

That is what you expected from GF, not unicorns and memes.
And I’m sure most of /co/ felt deceived and disappointed the same way. That’s why we despise Alex Hirsch as if he was a cheating girlfriend. That’s why /co/ is so wary and scornful towards new shows, trying not to get fooled again.
GF was more or less of a trauma for this board. GF was our gf, our first love, and now it’s our ex. Alex is our ex, the ex we try to forget about.

GF felt like a huge missed opportunity, it could've been so much more.
if season two had ended at 'Not What He Seems' and continued into a third season 3 it would have been so beneficial to the series.

When its a bunch of men in black investigating stuff, it has about as much impact as any other group. But if it's like in Lilo and Stitch where its essentially this constant threat of child services taking Lilo away, its really engaging.

In this case I don't really see that being the case unless like, Luz's parents actually hired an investigator to try and find their missing daughter, have him end up in the monster world and be this constant reminder that Luz is basically living with a total stranger away from family and to add in drama about will she wont she come home. I think that's much more interesting than just throwing random SCP guys into the mix.

True enough..... maybe a single detective looking into all the reports of property damage with no correlating eye-witnesses,. because of mind wipes, slowly going insane from trying to figure out what's happening in the town? Basically the descent of a respected detective into paranoia and doing his best to make sure whatever is wiping other peoples memories doesn't wipe his own culminating in him getting either off-screened by a demon or realizing he's gone completely insane once he goes through the demon portal and being unable to actually believe anything in the demon realm is real.

I hate the ending and the whole Stan remembering everything by the end for no good reason.

And most important, I hate that people were ok with that. Like, what? Stan's sacrifice was worthless by bringing back his memories like that. Maybe with a bit more clever writing and giving him a good reason why this happens I would be ok with it but no... all happens because love.

I fucking hate endings like that in any kind of kids media, the worst example for me is something like Smurfs lost village, if you're going to have an ending where a sacrifice has to be made and it's completely undone by something like a fucking photo album, then it's better to just not do it, As an anon earlier said "cartoons shape children's minds more than people are willing to admit" and part of that is what pisses me off about these endings, any kid watching could've taken that sacrifice and realize how they could make decisions or sacrifices as hard as that in their lives, but everything is perfect for everyone in the end, except Dipper who never went on to be truly happy with Ford and Mabel even gets to keep her fucking pig.

Anyway sorry for being a sperg, glad to see others have the same issues with GF as well

Well I'm not saying that's any better, I'm also not saying Dipper shouldn't be a wimp in general, I call him that because in episodes where Mabel wants him to do something for her, he always ends up doing it anyway while everyone else thinks he was in the wrong because he's so horrible for not wanting to go trick or treating, right? I can't recall an episode where they realize Mabel shouldn't be selfish all the fucking time.

IIRC, some people fell for it, some people were skeptical, but most in /gfg/ just thought it was really lame and not really a huge revelation whether true or not. And the real mystery, Stan having a twin, was long since decoded by us then.

It didn't cause nearly the shitstorm as that "Amon is unmasked as Aang" fakeshot. I think Alex was just making a pitiful attempt to ape that and then went on twitter as soon as he could to brag about fooling the notorious hacker 4chan.
