But Venom is the best superhero movie of 2018.

No illusions of grandeur, no pretentiousness, no political hubris, no dissatisfying cliffhangers, no "season 3 ep 8 filler" vibe, no complete rework of the source material.

Just plain fun, some action sequences, some quips and a lot of Tom Hardy doing his best.

I can't really see why people INSIST its a bad movie.

Its ENTIRELY Planet of the Symbiontes meets Lethal Protector plus The Hunger references. Eddie is a lovely screw-up loser with good intentions, Venom is an absolute blast and every line of his is amazing.

The Venom design is PERFECT and we all know studio shenanigans prevented the Spider-Man related origin and white spider symbol.

I know, I know, "How does Venom work without Spider-Man," but seriously, what does Morlun do if not try to eat Spider-Man?
At least a Kraven movie can have him hunting Venom if the Kraven's Last Hunt thing doesn't work out. Sony doesn't have any other animal fellas in the Venomverse for Morlun to eat unless they rewrite his character to just eat powerful beings like the symbiote or something.
A Morbius movie makes a lot more sense, which is why they chose him instead.

It ruins Spidey's backstory if it turns out his powers weren't foisted upon him in a random act of cruel fate, but instead he's just fulfilling some dumbass interdimensional prophecy that's basically about making him exist so that like 8 guys can eat him and everyone like him.
And I'm still not sure if Slott meant to say that the only reason why alternate universes exist is to host different versions of Spider-Man. I'd be pissed if that is what he meant, but if it wasn't, I'd be pissed that he devoted such a shocking amount of time to hinting at it.

I always understood it as Peter got the powers but also incidentally happened to fill the totemic role. He got his powers through science, and threw the totem cycle off-balance. Ezekiel was the real inheritor of the Spider totem, but Peter existing as Spider-Man was a problem for everyone involved because he was both inside and outside of the totemic system.

Will the new animated film feature Morlun, or is it just taking the name from Slott's run?
If it ends up being as popular as it seems, Morlun could get a significant profile boost.
It's also getting a theatrical release, isn't it? Maybe we'll see more "traditional" animated features in the future.
