>>103625007I've wondered about this -- and yes, I know, there may well be some diversity mandate going on here; we don't need to get into that-- but apart from the whole deal with Tom, Daria and Jane had rather similar opinions and though their viewpoints weren't really the same they meshed well together. One would often agree with the other or at least one wouldn't call out the other too harshly for thinking differently.
Daria and Jodie, OTOH, are both smart, able to see through society's bullshit, but they have very drastically different takes on things; both episodes that centered on them working together showed that they can argue, call each other out on shenanigans, and in general create conflict with each other that doesn't damn the friendship the way Tom threatened to tear apart Daria and Jane.
Of course, just having the same or updated characters with the same dynamic growing up in a different era than the 90s would technically make a fresh take on the original show, but if you want to be different/try something new, this is one way to do it.
