If men have acne problems etc then of course it will impact them (and I'm sorry if you do, I understand why you feel sad about that. Unfortunately acne takes to makeup really poorly so even if you could wear foundation you wouldn't be able to fully disguise it, the excess oil would give it the ugly cakey look which is perceived negatively).

That's not the same as having every man's bare skin be perceived as less professional.

Male preference for less makeup seems to be cultural and age dependent. I've found that older guys often prefer it, and men from certain immigrant backgrounds prefer it too.

Basically, guys that like hyper-feminine presentation like their women wearing makeup as well as wearing the heels and dresses and jewelry. Not wearing makeup is seen as too casual or slovenly, like the woman has stopped caring about putting in the effort to be attractive to her partner. There is an 'eye-candy' aspect to where these sorts o men like their gfs/wives looking obviously pretty and feminine because its a status booster for them.

If you want a girl in tees and jeans and sneakers you probably don't want her wearing makeup, the 'sexually dimorphic' presentation doesn't matter much to you anyway.

It doesn't make people terrible that they prefer women with a bit of makeup or that we're all accustomed to it to that degree. And it's also not true that women wear makeup "for men" or "not for men, they wear it for other women!" This is entirely subconscious and anyway all women DO look more attractive with makeup (as do all men)

As to why women wear it day to day: it's gentle social influence but moreso the significant economic pressure, because it's a social expectation to the extent of it being seen as being unkempt if women aren't wearing it.

The makeup thing is an arms race between women. First it was about pure volume because only high status women could afford it. Then the industry caught up and it was cheap enough for any women. I rather agree with this. No one wearing makeup is an even playing field, but its hard to compete when you aren't the only one wearing it, whether romantically or for job success. So you feel pressured to do it. On a macro level we see more and more 'assortive mating', wherein there are fewer couples being formed across socioeconomic lines. Previously most of these would be less wealthy (but attractive) women 'marrying up'. The beauty arms race is well beyond makeup now.

The well-to-do woman of 2020 won't be wearing much makeup at all, she's getting her eyebrows microbladed, her lashes lifted and tinted, her lips plumped and her skin made to look better with BB Glow treatments. Because determinism only removes free will from an omniscient perspective. One that statistical analysis doesn't provide. If you can't predict everything an individual is going to do, it's virtually the same thing as free will. No one in real life is like Batman predicting your every decision, you have some kind of agency. And because of that, people have to be held responsible for their actions in order to have a functional society, which we do.

What are we even arguing about here? Women and men and all animals and particles in the universe are being oppressed by the universe by determinism? Or maybe a woman who prefers not to wear makeup she can live life just fine, get a job and a bf/gf who thinks she's pretty without it, no problem. Because people have. And *do*. After all what's the alternative???
