It was just the same with Spongebob. When Hillenburg took a backseat after the movie, the show's quality made a nosedive. The reason the show's likeable again is due to Hillenburg returning and being a more active exec.
But unlike Spongebob, AT isn't just a wacky comedy where the plot is episodic.
I don't care about the waifuism, but if this AT debacle is one person's fault, it's goddamn Ward.
