Cartoons should NEVER focus on continuity.

South Park is proof of that, the show has been nose diving in quality after they started doing this.

There are no more jokes, it feels like a chore to watch the episodes. The show lost it's soul.

There were still some episodes of even SP continuity I liked and was interested in but the show seems terrible at capitalizing on season long arcs in finales. Their multiparters are mostly gold though.

Also even if SP sucks at continuity not all cartoons do. Venture Bros, another comedy, does fine with it I think. As does Bojack if you're into dramedy. But the difference with those shows ia they were made with serialization in mind while SP keeps trying to change their formula and not doing that great.

I wish season 21 finale had done the whole Cartman Heidi thing better. So much build up that I actually liked, leading to a clip show while all the characters wander aimlessly. Meanwhile the least subtle political commentary of the show's run plays out to a half assed Peter and the Wolf type deal. The worst part is the episode before it set expectations sky high for a big finish and it just...petered out.

I know most people hated Heiman but I really thought it was sweet and indeed funny at times. But the conclusion made even me wonder why they bothered. I get it, not playing the victim, stop doubling down against criticism - I get the moral but the way it was delivered was so joyless and tired. So I agree that they should try to keep episodes self contained most of the time.

Season 20's problem wasn't continuity. It was serialisation. Unlike any other season, It was a full-on 10-parter. Made even worse with them relying on the 2016 election for its story, and making a bad call on top of that.

Season 21's issue was that it focused too much on cleaning up Season 20's plotlines.

PC Principal would have been funny for one episode, but he has been on what 3 seasons now?

Horseshit. I get saying that it can bog certain shows down, but the idea that every cartoon should adhere to an adventure of the week formula is stupid. Just because you didn't like South Park's recent seasons doesn't mean that all shows can't do continuity.

This. I think this is what OP meant. Continuity and world building is cool, but tight serialuzation and relying on the same jokes is what's making SP not so great.

I wouldn't say never, I wouldn't use a comedy as an example, and I wouldn't use a show that transitionned from episodic to continuity. And then you got the obvious fact that Matt and Trey are straight up not really good at that beyong parodying existing storytelling tropes and throwing it all in a stew like they do in the games.
That being said, I prefer episodic shows and would avocate by your side because the vast majority writers and execs are terrible at planning a longform story. Also because episodic forces you to be good every fucking time since you can't just rely on people just forgiving bad episodes just because they care about the long time plot.

I think I'm done with this season after the latest episode.
When Kyle confronted Mr.Hanky about his twitter before he could even say it, I was thinking, "please don't say shit about Ambien".
And then.
Ambien.

It's so stale.
I don't really care about current events and only hear about them in passing--during the election year and when PC principle first showed up years ago it was kinda funny.
But now it's stale.

We've had multiple cartoons use continuity successfully over the years.

That being said continuity IS NOT for every cartoon.

It depends on cartoons and where they are aired. Stuff like on netflix continuity works really well since you can follow a story.

Some shows have adapted continuity and it turned them to absolute shit (like rick and morty, with season 3 being continuity every single episode and nowhere as good as the random short stories of s1/s2).

South Park did continuity right in season 6 with Kenny dying and being replaced by Butters and Tweek, the boys building a ladder to heaven, Cartman drinking his ashes and him and Kenny sharing a body.

Season 18's conituity were just dumb references to the previous episodes and a weird finale, season 19 tried to shove the conituinity in too hard the final three episodes. Season 20 was an absolute trainwreck. The continuity was them doing the same three jokes for an entire season. Season 21 should dropped Heidi.

Agreed. South Park has had continuity before, such as them killing off characters like Chef or the boys going into the fourth grade. It then turned into a serialised show where you had to watch all episodes in a Season from beginning to end.
Serialisation can work for other cartoons, but it doesn't work for South Park. Having a more episodic layout is better for them because it allows them to have better plots and jokes in the show.

I just watched the lastest episode, did Trey and Matt really write this episode ? This is probably the worst SP episode I've ever seen.

Though, I kinda anticipated South park getting worse since it's on comedy central (a channel that's become ridden with TDS - Trump Derangement Syndrome)

I dunno, SoT was great and kinda felt like a circa Season 5 episode/movie, TFBW wasn't too bad either, just worse then SoT since it drew more from the not as good seasons and the non-DLC ending was pretty meh, although i think that was the point, the former was also a Continuity Shlockfest and it was great.

Those two shows that they can do some good shit when they get off their ass and don't rely too much on CURRENT EVENTS, what we are seeing in the recent seasons is more the Bleeding part of the Bleeding Edge style they been writing episodes, yes the jokes about shit are made early, but that does not mean they are good ones.

The ambient and PC jokes felt repetitive but I do agree that it's better than the last two. The reason why people don't like it is because the social and political references were more hamfisted than the entirety of season 20. These reasons alone turn off many people.
