It has a good tutorial and relatively forgiving inputs for basic shit, but it's a reset heavy tag game with long combos, complicated system mechanics, plenty of character specific gimmicks and a huge performance gap between beginners and intermediate players.
It sold very well. It got the support it did largely because of fan funding through kickstarters, of which very very few of the supporters are ever going to be high level competitors.
The lack of development is because of Autumn Games screwing them over, a combination of bad luck and mismanagement on Lab0's part that made it inefficient or impossible to continue working on it in favor of starting a new project without all the red tape. Thus, Indivisible.
There are a lot of things that went wrong with Skullgirls, despite it being a great game, but lack of interest is absolutely not one of them.
