But clearly these people think that it's more important to make characters not like them, as if they know how it is to be someone else, they don't and their stories and characters suffer for it.
If they think it doesn't matter and certain things are universal they wouldn't need to make characters clearly not of themselves because if you can relate to others despite such things why make the character that way in the first place?
