In San Francisco, journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) interviews serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson). Meanwhile, biotechnology corporation Life Foundation retrieves a deep-space probe containing three extraterrestrial symbiotic lifeforms. Its CEO, Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed), becomes obsessed with bonding people to symbiotes to prepare humanity for Earth’s inevitable ecological collapse, and begins illegally experimenting on vagrants, resulting in numerous deaths and attracting Brock’s attention. Brock arranges for an interview with Drake through his girlfriend Ann Weying (Michelle Williams), a lawyer affiliated with Life Foundation, and accuses him of exploiting innocents. Ann breaks up with Brock for jeopardizing her career, and Drake later uses his influence to have Brock fired. Meanwhile, the symbiote Riot infects one of Drake’s researchers, Dr. Emerson Collins (Reid Scott).

Brock is approached by Dr. Dora Skirth (Jenny Slate), who disagrees with Drake’s methods and wants to help Brock stop him. With her aid, Brock breaks into Life Foundation’s secret research facility in search of evidence of Drake’s crimes, and comes across one of his subjects, Donna Diego (Michelle Lee), who has been driven insane by the symbiote Scream. Believing her to be in danger, Brock attempts to help her, but Scream attacks him, alerting security forces led by Roland Treece (Scott Haze). Brock accidentally bonds with the symbiote Venom, who helps Brock escape back to his apartment. Scream flees as well.

Brock is later ambushed by Treece and his men, but fends them off with Venom’s help. He learns that Venom comes from planet Klyntar and was an outcast among the symbiotes for wanting to experience life through his hosts rather than just consuming them. Venom was fleeing from Riot and Scream, who were ordered to execute him, when they were captured by the probe.
