Not everyone having cellphones, making meeting up a challenge, etc. But that said, being able to cherry pick the aesthetic can at least let you draw from a wider well. Shows like Venture Bros. and Archer come to mind. Venture Bros. had its visual roots in 70's Hannah Barbera cartoons, but spread out from there to incldue 80's stuff, and heck even straight up comic superheroes as of the move to New York, all the while having it be set ostensibly modern day. It even gives its world a weird alternate history too. Archer plays it faster and looser, in that characters have lived through world war 2, its somehow still coldwar, weird modern hardware stuff along side 60's fashion and spygadgets, along side normal ass real life. Then bouncing between Miami Vice, Detective shows, 40's noir, and Indiana Jones pulp adventure in the most recent season I haven't seen.
Long and short of it is, I can see it actually being set in a specific time period being good to keep some consistant world rules, but it picking and choosing the bits of "60" and 80's or whatever it wants for its weird witchy show, could be neat for at least the visuals. So yeah.
Which speaking of I've never seen Riverdale myself, is it any good? I've mostly been put off because I had that "Old Square" version of archie in my mind, but also because I'm not sure I'm a fan of teenager soap opera drama stuff.
