It's also a good idea to join some community or other. There's an amateur game dev general in /vg/ where you can get questions, and a good place to hang out if you don't want to get any work done.
So no, starting isn't hard, provided you don't set your sights too high and get scared off by the amount of things you need to do to make, say, a 3D platformer. Unless of course you're some sort of Golden Child and you're able to do that on the first try.
