It's a trendy buzz and speculation topic because it brings clicks and creates speculation, so the media are keeping it alive and speculating about it. It became a thing because the #giveelsaagirlfriend tag was such an effortless and easy way to virtue signal that you're progressive and support queer rep in the media and follow the times and memes, so it became popular and journalists seized that to get views and create hype about the movie.
They keep asking the WDAS / Frozen crew direct questions about #geagf and if she could be queer, and obviously because the Disney people aren't idiots they won't shit on the positive hype and say that no we won't make her gay ever because that would kill the merch sales and we're here to make money. Instead they evade and vague and say that it's not impossible though they're NOT promising anything, they want to "listen to the character" and stay true to them and will consider all options blah blah yes LGBT rep is very important.
Then the journalists, hungry for clicks and scandal, report "it's not impossible, we consider many options, no promises tho" as "it's a possibility we're considering" and idiots fall for that.
