I feel like in the 90's and even the early 2000's creators were trying to see what they could get away with and push the boundary's of what could be shown on t.v. It feels like creators theses days just bend over to execs and say stuff like "well I'm just glade to have a job". Everything theses days looks too kid friendly, I want more stuff like Swat Cats and Batman Beyond. I probably sound old, but fuck I'm tired of japan out doing us, it doesn't even have to be dark and edgy just give me something that doesn't fell like it was made for baby's.

While I agree, most of the audience for cartoons are in fact children. Batman beyond was clearly more marketed towards young teenagers so its not really pushing too much in terms of boundaries aside from the high death count for criminals.

It's supposed to be representative of a Gotham that's gone without Batman for over twenty years. Yes, the intro is edgy, but that reflects the twisted cyberpunk hellscape that Gotham turned into pretty well, I think. It always reminds me of that one Toonami promo they ran for this show:

That was 20 years before the start of Batman beyond, it was a flashback of sorts. Bruce looks noticeably younger in that scene then he does in most of the series.
