>>102431486The old Godzilla movies used two primary techniques
a) Puppetry, which is not animation and
b) Guys in suits, which are also not animation
as far as I know, none of them used stop-motion
Compare that to the Harryhausen monsters - which are miniatures, animated frame-by-frame, and then overlayed onto live action. That's animation, but they're not animated films because the majority of the content is still live action. For this same reason, CGI is animation, but a live action movie with CGI in it (say, Lord of the Rings for example) is not an animated movie, but a movie which is all CGI (say, Toy Story) is an animated movie.
Further compare that to something like Isle of Dogs or Paranorman, which are completely stop motion, and are, thus, animated films.
