People over-exaggerate how "bad" AoU was (it's a mixed bag with some decent moments and some mediocre moments) and use that to retroactively act like Avengers 1 was the shittiest movie to be produced in the history of cinema. Avengers was a good movie, and was only hampered by the awful TV-show aesthetic of the production.

It's not as much of a problem in the big set pieces like in Germany or New York, which are what most people remember.

It's only annoying in the interior hellicarrier, and with some of the costuming. Black Widow's costume and all of the SHIELD suits are aesthetically awful compared to the stuff in Winter Soldier just two years later. And the hallway scenes are awfully lit and visually boring as fuck.

Still, I think it holds together despite all that because Whedon gave a lot of thought to the character dynamics.

Vision was probably his best achievement. He completely steals AoU, gets the biggest laugh (hammer) and best serious scene (last conversation with Ultron) and a characterization that is true to the comics while also being fresh. Plus his movie version single-handedly revived his comics popularity.

The Russo/Markus/McFeely team has done as well or better with a lot of the characters but they have no clue what to do with Vision except nerf him and make him really socially awkward.

Everyone largely forgot about Thor 1 nowadays because it was forgettable, but at the time it was popular, peole liked Chris Helmsworth and the guy who plays Loki whose name I forget as Thor and Loki, thus they were hyped to see them interact with RDJ and Crhis Evans, who they also liked.

You don't see anybody with the same of hype for Batfleck and Henry Cavil, maybe Gadot but that's it. Cyborg who? Flash who?

The only way Avengers could've flopped was if the movies that led up to it were also disasters.

I don't hate it, I just don't really love it. It's the one thing that holds the movie back. There's no excuse for a movie with that high of a budget to look so bland in the non-set-piece scenes.

Like I said above, the Russos' production team outclassed Avengers when it came to the look of things, despite working in the same cold, emotionless realm of giant SHIELD bases. And the Russos are TV guys, too.

Cap comes into Avengers 4 with no arc, whereas Tony and Thor have arcs extensively built up in Infinity War.

Also, what's the point of Vision? He's now dead having done nothing in two Russo movies.

And the other anon is imho right, while Infinity War had awesome battle scenes inbetween (fight against Thanos, Thor entrance ), the group fights of Avengers 1 were setting a new standard and are on the level, if not better than those of Infinity War- with a comparably TINY budget.

That is what Joss Weedon did without someone else showing him a rough blueprint as to how to do it. He and his team did that 100%.

Most were introduced in separate movies, and crossovers did not explore them to improve my amount of caring.
