>>102164585I mean, I like Finn and Kylo at least conceptually. The most interesting thing in the entire ST is Kylo potentially being the Hitler-esque thorn in the military's side: they can't get rid of him and he keeps fucking around. Might be fun. But we haven't actually seen anything like that yet, aside from his tantrum at the end of TLJ. Otherwise, he's just PT Anakin but done on purpose.
Finn's a total fucking waste, and has been since the bar scenes from TFA. He runs away because he can't handle his comrades being mowed down like mooks. And then proceeds to turn around and mow them down like mooks. Playing up him being a cowardly pacifist who needs to balance his desires to not have people killed but also increasingly to actively help people could've been interesting. That, and tying any of that into expanding the First Order's rank and file characters and maybe, I don't know, their silver girl Boba Fett character.
Rey is just Rey, and doesn't immediately lead to any sort of interesting concepts like the other two without more serious reworking. Maybe actually having some substance to her self esteem issues for a movie and a half or so, and not making her instantly capable of most everything she does would've provided some more ample opportunities. Make her Luke's shitter apprentice from the beginning instead of fucking around for a whole movie.
As people have mentioned, the PT gave us a renaissance of SW material building off of it, something we're still getting to this day. As bad as it was, it was rich and open enough in concept to do this. But what has the ST given us? Jack fucking shit, and from the beginning I knew it was because it requires the entire setting to be rebooted and in stasis since the OT, just so it can do the same shit during the ST. It's almost fundamentally lacking in creative energy.
