Pic related. The first 39 grand you make is taxed at the lowest tax bracket, then the next up to about 125 grand is taxed at the second tax bracket, then only the amount above that is taxed at the highest tax bracket.
It is impossible to receive a raise that lowers your salary, because only the amount you get that puts you into the tax bracket above you is taxed at the higher rate, not the entire salary.
