To me, it's whatever the current popular art style trend is, usually influenced by CalArts showrunners or a circle of friends who met up in CalArts or had immense influence over other people. Sugar, for example, while her art style is not CalArts-y, clearly shifted her own art style after hanging out with a different group of people. She draws in a much more conventional manner than she did maybe a decade ago. Pic related I consider CalArts, but when the trend changes in 10 years, this will no longer hold true.
That other anon though seems to be using the term "CalArts" as a way to say "safe, streamlined cartoon styles". Which is PROBABLY a more accurate way of describing it, because then you can lump Disney in there too, who is the original CalArts.
I mean, people throw the term out all over the fucking place, but I'm trying to make some sense of why other anon is using it.
