Their backstory at this point is beyond convoluted. You've got time displaced characters and a timeline that no longer makes any sense due to time fuckery, characters from alternate timelines/dimensions, like half the cast has died and come back to life, some of them several times, they've been forced through major personality changes and mega events that shouldn't have happened for forced conflict, retcons, retcons, retcons, asspulls, retcons, and about a thousand other problems, a big one being that they don't even fit with the overall marvel earth anymore and haven't for decades.
Because of how convoluted it is, the only people left following it are the most rabid of fans, and they will literally go from zero to unreasonable outrage over nothing. I've seen xmen fans jump down stranger's throats in comic store's over people voicing mild criticisms of an xmen character. Writers on xmen have to navigate all of that bullshit, and somehow do nothing to offend those fans, or those people will drag their name through the mud endlessly, which is why it's risky for newer writers to touch.
