When did "Its a comic book." Stop being a valid defense? It's a genre made famous and rich by contrivances, nonsense, and general wackiness? Is it a good thing that's not valid anymore? Do we have to take them so seriously?

It's never been a valid defence. If something is contrived, nonsense and generally wacky in such a way that it's satisyfing, then it can be great. If something is contrived, nonsense and generally wacky in such a way that it's unsatisyfing for the reader, then that can suck. Just saying 'lol comic book' is meaningless.
A manga example is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, its full of both the first and second kind of wackiness, and saying 'lol, its a manga' doesn't help separate the two.

We can see them for what they are; the cheap fast food of the medium, but where we draw the line of campiness being thematic to the work or where obvious marketing has a hand in making decisions, we draw some arbitrary lines where "it's a comic" should be seen as valid. Men wearing ridiculous outfits and women wearing sexy ridiculous outfits is something comics do, but when there's a demographic saying "well that's why I'm not going to buy it" and the big two marketing themselves differently to get the casuals they're missing out on with the wave of popularity and interest made by all these superhero movies is just as typical of the medium. It's meant for marketing.
