its not unreasonable to carry self defence weapons in an extremely hostile environment
they are ideally locked in the weapons cabinet and in a perfect world would never need to draw them, but if an evil space polar bear wants to eat you, you probably will want something other than a frying pan to defend yourself

the unreasonable part is when you are carrying miniguns or rocket launchers to "defend" against wildlife

If it's uncharted space though, would it not be a good idea to bring more lethal weapons though? Who knows what kinds of shit that you'd encounter in an area as vast as space?
