Setting that aside, I do give Korra credit for (to my knowledge) being one of the first, if not THE first, western animated shows to hint at the existence of bisexuality and treat a same-sex relationship as no big deal (and in fact the culmination of a long-running friendship).
I take credit away for Korra not doing so openly and instead relying on shipper intuition and a couple shots of hugging and blushing to claim they clearly established this as a possibility. If they'd at least teased this more explicitly from the beginning of the show so shippers weren't treating every little interaction as proof they were going to muff-dive in the spirit world, I'd respect them more for working within Nick's undoubtedly strict "no kissin', kids are watching" policy. As it is, they just knew a large portion of the fans wanted it to happen, I'm sure THEY wanted it to happen (at least from S2 onward), and I have no problem with it actually happening. /co/ went from masturbating over the idea of Korrasami to flat-out hating the idea of Korrasami the moment it went from being their fantasy to being a romantic moment/"win" for the terrible, terrible libs.
Good on the comics for finally just owning up to "yeah, they're bi" and featuring plenty of kissin'.
On the note of animu, the Japs are still very homophobic and it's a goddamn miracle any time a show portrays an everyday same-sex relationship in a positive light. "But that's forbidden love!"/"We're just very good friends"/"I'm straight" (says the guy fucking another guy) are established tropes for very explicit reasons. They've gotten more open about this shit since I interviewed loads of them in 2004 but to claim animu has been freely and for a long time saying same sex love is okay is to pretend Kaorin pining for Sakaki is the equivalent of a pair of girls dating.
