>>101378475I would argue that there are two kinds of "progressive" agendas in the social sphere.
One is inclusion of minorities, equal legal rights and reduction of inhibiting factors.
And the other is trying to reach the same goals by suppressing majorities, denying humanity or agency to groups of people and introducing inhibiting factors to hamper people with perceived privilege.
And so far this book has done a good job of not trying to score points by dunking on anyone. Everyone not an outright villain has justifiable motivations and clear biases. So you know if Zoe finds men useless, that's because she has no interest in them. At the same time Josh goes henching because he was picked up by shady people after Kamala kinda accidentally his career. Although it remains unclear how much of that was his own fault. Still, the book does not make him a monster hell-bent on revenge.
Comparing Kamala to America Chavez, you see how different the tone is. How much more Wilson understands how people tick, how much more love she has for her characters in all their various ideas and flaws.
Kamala is nice, but she fucks up. She tries to do the right thing but can't manage her schedule or deny a request which fucks someoneover every time and she feels terrible about that.
America is an abrasive asshole with zero sense of responsibility. But Gabby is incapable of seeing that as a flawed individual who should strive to do better and help those around her. No, she is obviously the best thing since sliced bread and everybody has to tell her all the time. And she has no genuine moments of curiosity or shame. She knows she is the invincible avatar of everything lesbian LatinX.
One of these is about the radical notion that people should be treated as such, the other can hardly fathom that other people have a life of their own and interests that might be different from her own.
That is not to say Wilson doesn't get pretty PSA at times. But it is meant for a PSA-relevant audience...
