>>101338480It's obscured by the cropping done in the image but I would assume it's because it is actually an attempt to make the hand make sense according to the position it is in, because all of the fellow's fingers are intertwined in the fingers of the other hand that he is holding. The angle at which we see the hand makes this difficult to perceive; the lack of knuckles or much definition to the hand does not help matters.
When you think about it it technically matches his right hand well, but the problem is that his right hand lacks definition as well, so no matter how you draw it it's going to look like a wad from some angles.
