These facilities are meant to hold the kids while their parents undergo prosecution, or if it's a lone child, while a relative is contacted so they can be delivered to them (since they are minors that can't be prosecuted).
They used to keep the families together, but that changed when people complained about that some years ago, as it was considered inhuman to keep these kids in custody, even if it was with their parents.
A lot of these proceedings are actually really fast, the immigrants are usually recommended to plead guilty, as it is only considered a misdemeanor, not a felony (it's only a felony if they are caught crossing after prior removal), what's happening lately is that families are starting to plead for asylum, so the cases prolong and these kids end up in these facilities for a long time, and some of them are even given up to foster care (which is another huge problem).
What should be considered is that they can plead asylum at points of entry, and asylum is not for purely economic immigrants.
The other solution is catch-and-release, but you're basically citing them to court, which a lot of people will inevitable dodge, making things harder to track down.
It's not as simple, a lot of these facilities are extremely underfunded, which is why these kids are kept in these less-than-desirable conditions. Staff are often discouraged to even engage in physical contact for the fear of lawsuit (as it can happen).
The whole thing is just a huge legal mess that can't be dissected by simply shouting NAZI NAZI NAZI at a random ICE agent at the top of your lungs.
